Just a short hop over the English Channel from the UK, Northern France is easily accessible, yet worlds apart from other European destinations. Bursting with culture and history which is found against a backdrop of beautiful beaches, rugged landscapes and characterful towns, it has all the ingredients for a holiday full of exploration and relaxation.
Our properties in Northern France are found dotted throughout the beautiful regions of Normandy and Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Normandy is synonymous with wartime history, and for those wanting to delve into the past and explore historic locations, there’s much to discover. Listen for the echoes of war which still seem to resonate on the beaches of the D-Day landings and take in the fabulous intricacy of the Bayeux Tapestry. The monastery of Mont St-Michel is steeped in history, while Normandy’s cities will have you captivated in different ways, including the medieval buildings of Rouen, pretty waterside houses of Honfleur and striking concrete architecture of Le Havre.
Nord-Pas-de-Calais, meanwhile, exhibits an enticing rural landscape, largely unspoilt and punctuated by equally traditional towns and villages. French Flanders promises history and charming towns aplenty, or visit Saint-Omer and Valenciennes for striking architecture and more vibrant culture.
Lille, with its Flemish influences and delicious Belgian delicacies such as ‘moules-frites’ is a highlight in Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Here you’ll find numerous delights to capture your attention, from fascinating museums to shopping and an active nightlife. To witness more Flemish influence, visit Arras and Calais. The Grand Place and Place des Héros of the former boast elegant buildings in Flemish Baroque style, and Calais offers a beach, beautiful architecture in the form of its Town Hall and Belfry and some intriguing museums.
The coast of Northern France includes the cliff-flanked beaches of the Côte d'Opale, some of which are great for surfing, others are perfect for family bucket-and-spade days. Boulogne-sur-Mer is a top spot for shopping and eating out, not to mention visiting the fantastic Nausicaa, the town’s world-class aquarium. The beaches of Normandy also offer a wealth of variety; relax on the golden sands of Arromanches amongst the vestiges of the wartime Mulberry harbour, dive into the deep refreshing waters of cliff-backed Étretat and soak up the charms of Ouistreham, a traditional sea-side resort close to the ferry port.
With something for everyone, Northern France is a wise choice for a group holiday, and our large villas and gites in the area provide the perfect self-catering accommodation for your stay.
