Things to do in Tunbridge Wells

Emily 22 July 2020

A thriving market and historic spa town boasting plenty of sights and attractions for the whole family to enjoy during a visit to the area, Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent is a great destination for your next UK based holiday. Located in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there are picturesque villages and towns aplenty.

While enjoying a break in such a beautiful county, it's only fitting that your accommodation should also impress and delight. Our stunning collection of group holiday cottages in Kent certainly fit the bill, offering stylish, comfortable and spacious accommodation for any occasion.

To inspire your next visit to the ‘garden of England', as the county is affectionately known, we've rounded up a few of our favourite things to do in Royal Tunbridge Wells while you're there.

Step back in time

Scotney Castle, Tunbridge Wells

Scotney Castle is a picturesque country house estate with glorious gardens set in beautiful woodlands. Explore the castle ruins by the lake, uncover the secrets and stories behind the gorgeous country house or simply unwind in the gardens. Complete with a pretty tea room for refreshments and plenty of picnic spots if you fancy bringing your own, little ones can enjoy running around the grounds and the ‘Explorer’ map available from the shops is perfect for keeping them entertained and learning about the estate.

Shop ‘til you drop

For a spot of retail therapy, eating, entertainment, and pretty strolls complete with a lively atmosphere, the elegant walkway known as the Pantiles is great for winding a few hours away in the town centre. There's a bustling market, annual events, fantastic eateries offering a variety of cuisines and great coffee shops, perfect for people watching. In the past, this is where the gentry and royals came to relax and there is plenty of colonial architecture and historic buildings to admire.

Relax in the great outdoors

Dunorlan Park, Tunbridge Wells

Just outside the town centre is the award winning 78 acre Dunorlan Park. A wonderful open green space for families to enjoy, picnic and relax, this Grade II listed park also boasts an amazing boating lake, ponds, play areas, sculptures, and a café. Outdoor activities including fishing, gardener walks and bird watching are available and if you or the kids like to keep active, there is a free weekly Parkrun on Saturday mornings. During the summer months, pedalos and kayaks are available for hire on the lake.

Explore by rail

Enjoy an altogether different perspective of the countryside surrounding Tunbridge Wells from the carriage of a steam train on the Spa Valley Railway. Much of the fun is in the journey itself, with varied experiences on offer throughout the year from afternoon tea to days out with Thomas the Tank Engine himself! To make the most out of your trip, plan your stops to visit some of the attractions en route in Eridge, Groombridge, High Rocks and Tunbridge Wells itself.

As the sun sets on another memorable day in Tunbridge Wells, head back to your Kent holiday cottage to relax, unwind and relive some of the experiences of the day.
