This imposing 700-year-old castle in the Perthshire village of Doune is full of history; it is a spectacular holiday home for large groups and a splendid setting for celebrations.

Experience your own chapter of living history during a stay at this Scottish castle near Doune, Perthshire. Up to 12 guests can sleep under the same roof as Bonnie Prince Charlie and Sir Walter Scott previously have. Luxuriate in the abundance of great character still present at the six-bedroom castle, as well as in its sumptuous antique furnishings. Enjoy it as a magnificent retreat, wander through its beautiful parkland estate or head out to explore the surrounding area.

Your splendid 700-year-old castle tells a story at every turn. Step inside to discover its exposed timberwork, impressive fireplaces and atmospheric wooden panelling. Your substantial kitchen/diner will be the perfect place to serve mountains of Scottish food to your group, while the music room offers another ground-floor space to spill into. You’ll find you also have a useful boot room and a family shower room on this floor. The upper-level accommodation can all be found up historic, castle-style stairs, which may be unsuitable for younger or less mobile guests. Head up to the first-floor area of the castle’s right wing to unwind in your incredible lounge or enjoy lively meals together in your elegant dining room. Climb a few more steps to a bedroom and bathroom and discover an attic bedroom and its bathroom also in this part of the castle. Explore the left wing of the house, where another first floor can be found. An additional bedroom is situated here – and you can also watch TV or pot a few balls on the snooker table in a second lounge. Find more fairy-tale accommodation in your very own tower, which houses three more bedrooms (one with a priest hole), plus a family bathroom and a shower room. This ancient, castle also has a vaulted chapel on the basement level, which can be reserved for special occasions. Wander out into the private grounds whenever you choose; explore the different areas, watch the children playing in the walled garden and take your afternoon tea out on to the lawn to enjoy in the sunshine. Ample parking is available at the castle.

Take a short stroll to your neighbouring stronghold, 14th-century Doune Castle (you may recognise it from Monthy Python films), or wander into the village of Doune and explore its shops, cafes, and eateries. The surrounding area is perfect for wildlife walks and if you want to get even closer, pay a visit to Argaty Red Kites farm (2 miles) on the Braes of Doune where red kites have been reintroduced and where there's a feeding station so you can see these spectacular birds up close and in their majestic flight. Visit Stirling (8.5 miles) and its extraordinary 16th-century castle and palace which command a lofty position over the small city with far-reaching views of the countryside - highlights include the Great Hall, the Royal Chapel, and the Castle Vaults where younger visitors can enjoy interactive exhibitions. Or take a drive to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park where you can go fishing, cycle woodland trails by Loch Venachar and hike the rugged landscape of Callander's Pass. Be sure to also visit Callander town, popular in Victorian times with romantic poets and artists; today you can enjoy its wonderful architecture, shops, and cafes or hire bikes for those forest adventures. As evening falls, you'll enjoy the drive home where you can relax in the garden with a favourite wee dram and watch the sun go down over Doune castle. Private parking is available for guests, and convenient supermarket food delivery is also available in this area.
