This light-filled house may be grand, but it's far from stuffy or old-fashioned. Large windows and bright, modern decor complement the traditional building. It's been furnished with great care, mixing old and new. It's ideally placed for active holidays, with many acres of grounds to explore, and hills and moors close by. It's also within reach of both the Cairngorms National Park and the coast. While it's set in glorious seclusion, the town of Kirriemuir, with its shops, pubs and restaurants, is an easy 5-mile drive away.

Step inside and you'll be struck first by the impressive hallway, with classical-style pillars, a flagstone floor and a sweeping staircase. There is a large oval-shaped drawing room with an open fire, and a separate TV room, also with an open fire. Both have plenty of comfortable, sociable seating. The formal dining room has a large, grand table with room for everyone to gather around. For casual dining, there is a separate breakfast room. The traditional-style kitchen, with an Aga, electric cooker, fridge/freezer, additional freezer and microwave, is on the lower-ground floor, and is home to another table giving you a third dining option. The games room, with a table tennis table, is also on this floor and there is a separate utility room with a washing machine. There are nine bedrooms spread mostly over the first and second floors, with one on the lower-ground floor, each sleeping two. Of these, seven are double or king-size rooms and two are twins. One bedroom has an en-suite, and two share a Jack and Jill bathroom, and there are another five bathrooms in addition.

Outside, there are extensive grounds with lawns and flowerbeds, and private woodlands on the estate. There is ample parking.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

There are many attractions throughout this lovely area, with the Loch of Lintrathen (12 miles) and RSPB Loch of Kinnordy Nature Reserve (7 miles) both perfect for keen walkers and nature-lovers. The setting for Shakespeare's Macbeth and the childhood home of the Queen Mother, Glamis Castle with its stunning gardens (11.5 miles), is also nearby.

You will be ideally situated for visiting the popular market town of Forfar (9.5 miles) which has a variety of independent shops, restaurants and pubs, and is home to numerous attractions including the Meffan Museum and Art Gallery, Forfar Loch Country Park and the Pitmuies Gardens. The pretty town of Kirriemuir is also nearby (6.5 miles), and is the home of Kirriemuir Camera Obscura, the fascinating Gateway to the Glens Museum and the JM Barrie Birthplace – in honour of the creator of Peter Pan.

There are several golf courses in the area, including Alyth (15.5 miles), Glenisla (15 miles) and Kirriemuir (5 miles). Other attractions within easy reach are the Pictish Room (11 miles), Redwings Mountains horse sanctuary (6 miles) and the tea rooms and nature reserve at Murton Farm (12 miles). Heading north, you will reach the outskirts of the glorious Cairngorms National Park (12 miles).

Fantastic location with acres of surrounding land and a shallow river going round the estate. Thankfully we carried 10 bikes and was well worth it for all adults/kids to cycle on/off road. Cottage was well equipped with plenty of space for everyone.

What and amazing property I only wish we had more time to explore the huge and enchanting house and grounds. I highly recommend it for large groups and those with kids, although do be aware there are many many stairs, some of them steep.
