A delightful coastal village between the bustling resorts of Southwold and Aldeburgh, Dunwich was once a thriving medieval port with a population one-sixth the size of London’s. Known as ‘Suffolk’s Atlantis’ because of 13th-century storms that swept away most of its buildings, today Dunwich is a holiday hot spot thanks to its huge beach and Dunwich Heath, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty buzzing with wildlife and home to everything from tiny bees to magnificent deer. Reminders of the village’s ancient history abound with a friary, Roman road and leper chapel all to be discovered, while just 3 miles away, RSPB Minsmere makes a great family-friendly day out. Elegant Southwold, 9 miles to the north, is the place to head to for pier and promenade strolls and perhaps a tour of the famous Adnams Brewery. Just 11 miles to the south, upmarket Aldeburgh offers a similar selection of independent stores, galleries and eateries.

Original floor bricks serve as a reminder that the ground floor of this idyllic holiday retreat was originally two stables. The property remains full of character and has one of the best locations in the village – just a short walk from the beach and one of the east coast’s most popular local pubs. Traditional country styling flows throughout the building, with an impressive kitchen, a spacious dining room, a handy utility room and a conservatory with marsh views all on the ground floor. There’s a double bedroom and family bathroom here too, which could be ideal for guests wanting some quiet time. An open staircase leads to a warm and welcoming sitting room on the first floor, complete with a TV, DVD and Juliet balcony doors from which you can enjoy marsh and sea views. A king-size bedroom on this floor has its own stylish en-suite shower room, while two other bedrooms offer a range of sleeping options: one has twin beds that can be pushed together to make a king-size bed and the other has a single bed with additional pull-out to make twin beds – just specify your preference when you book. A shower room completes the convenience of this upper floor.

Outside, the huge garden has grass, a decked area and a BBQ for guest use. There’s a trampoline with a safety enclosure and the beach is just moments away. An automatic gate system gives an added sense of security.

Dunwich is a wonderful Suffolk village. The Coach House suited our dog family very well and truly is a dog friendly cottage (many holiday cottages say they are, but aren't once you arrive. Enjoyed our stay, thank you.

The cottage was very warm and comfortable and in a good location for winter walks. Pity that there was no woodburner or open fire but overall a well equipped cottage. It would be a bit cramped for 8 people but for two couples it was just right

The Coach House, Dunwich, is a superb property. It is very well laid out with two reception areas in addition to the dining room and kitchen. With a 4th bedroom downstairs it is easy to accommodate grandparents on a family holiday. Provision in the property is very generous (it felt as if the owners were sharing their property rather than simplyRead more running a business) and the owners have thought of everything, including for dog owners (which we are not). The Coach House is in a perfect location for the beach, Pub and endless well maintained footpaths through woods and nature reserves. The house is very well equipped, warm, clean and comfortable. The garden is large and secure - perfect for our dogs. Thoroughly recommended!

Superb accommodation in a fantastic location in Dunwich. Only a few hundred yards to the beach and the local pub. The Coach House was both stylish and well equipped, with fantastic views from the first floor lounge. The large garden and drive way are both secure and dog friendly. The coach house is ideally situated if you are looking for peace and quiet and idyllic walks on the doorstep. Extremely dog friendly with a great sized garden for them to run around in. This property is in the perfect location next to the beach and opposite the pub. Good local walks. The private parking is invaluable peak times and the large dog-safe garden a big plus point for the kids to play in too. It works very well for us (kids aged 12-14 and grandparents who can stay in the ground floor room).

The Coach House is a fantastic property which is very well situated and very well appointed. We would not hesitate to book it again. It was very thoughtfully equipped - hooks behind doors and next to showers, plenty of drawers in the bathrooms and bedrooms, excellent kitchen equipment, a shed full of deck chairs and an extra garden table to use. The property is perfectly placed for many walks along stunning beaches. With a secure back garden and automatic gate system, totally pet secure, the dogs had the best holiday.
