Nestled on the LLangollen Canal, Lyneal is home to this peaceful retreat perfect for those with disabilities and vulnerabilities. With tranquil waterside views, accessible walking routes, and a fantastic location near Ellesmere and the England-Wales border, this area offers a gentle yet engaging escape for all. Ellesmere (3 miles) is home to the largest mere in North Shropshire, where you can enjoy the view from accessible pathways and seating areas. Colemere Country Park (1 mile) provides flat, well-maintained paths around its picturesque mere, ideal for wheelchair users and those who prefer an easier walk. For water-based activities, Alderford Lake (11 miles) offers easy access for adaptive water sports as well as a cafe with step-free access. Or, if you’d prefer a slower pace, you can simply relax by the water and watch the world go by.

Guests have exclusive access to the entire site, which includes three cottages, beautifully maintained gardens, and a dedicated wash/utility building. At the heart of the property is Heritage Wharf Cottage, designed as the communal hub for guests. Here, you’ll find a fully equipped kitchen and utility room with fridge, freezer, sink and cupboards with an adjoining large disabled toilet. A welcoming dining room with a TV and an open fire, and a bright conservatory/sunroom furnished with a comfortable L-shaped sofa and a leather reclining chair for unwinding together. Flanking the communal space are two identical, thoughtfully designed cottages. Each features two fully accessible, wheelchair-friendly bedrooms – one double and one twin, 3.5cm clearance between the floor and the base of the beds. Every bedroom is equipped with tea and coffee facilities and TV for added comfort. A spacious, accessibility-friendly wet room can be found in each cottage. For added convenience, a separate utility building houses a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Set right on the canal, the gardens offer a peaceful, fully enclosed retreat with plenty of space to relax and reflect. Guests can enjoy al fresco dining with a brick-built BBQ, outdoor tables and chairs, and a dedicated patio area featuring a picnic bench with wheelchair-friendly seating and a parasol for shade. The cottages’ grounds connect to a network of public footpaths, allowing guests to immerse themselves in nature at their own pace.

This is a lovely set of cottages updated to a high standard in a lovely location and the Lyneal Trust volunteers were very helpful and friendly. It is a good place for moderately disabled guests to stay with proper wet room bathrooms and step free access. The narrow boat trip we did with a wheelchair one day was excellent and very good value.

These cottages are fantastic - well equipped, thoughtfully designed and clean. Really good value for money and Lyneal Trust were very flexible on arrangements for number of Carers staying etc. It has enabled me to have a holiday with 2 frail people with dementia. Being dog friendly too means companion pets can come along, so important for familiRead morearity and comfort. The grounds are exceptional and its a wonderful calm space to sit and connect to nature. This entire site is exceptional I know of nowhere else offering this unique blend of benefits. There are quite a lot of comings and goings from Volunteers so thats something to be aware of, but everyone was friendly and kept their distance. The bedrooms are separate to the communal area which means that Carers can get a break but for people with dementia this can be disorientating but easily remedied with tactics that you will be familiar with when helping people with these problems.
