This lovely property in idyllic surroundings sleeps eight guests – perfect for a family reunion or gathering of friends. The detached stone cottage is on the outskirts of Llanffestiniog, less than 1 mile from the village pub and within 3 miles of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Once known as the slate capital of the world, the town is now a hot spot for innovative activity centres such as Zip World Titan, which whisks you high above Blaenau and down to the valley beneath and Bounce Below, an underground network of trampolines in a vast, illuminated cavern. Take a glimpse into Blaenau’s history with a deep mine tour at Llechwedd and, if mountain biking trails and thrills appeal, head for Antur Stiniog. Climb aboard the delightful Ffestiniog steam train for a scenic journey to Porthmadog and the coast, where you can enjoy a stroll around the charming Italianate-style village of Portmeirion (8.5 miles). For a complete contrast, visit rugged Dolwyddelan Castle (8.5 miles) one of several castles built to command the mountain passes in this epic landscape. Nearer to home, there are wonderful walks on the doorstep, with a fairy-tale waterfall just a few metres away.

The hallway leads to an open-plan living area and welcoming lounge, with comfortable, stylish sofas and chairs for up to 12 guests. Relax in front of the cosy wood burner, set in a stone chimney breast, and admire the wonderful mountain view from a large sliding door that opens to the garden patio. There is a TV and bookcase full of books, games and maps to browse while you plan tomorrow’s adventure. A wall papered with a large-scale map of Snowdonia is an eye-catching feature in the dining area, which houses an elegant table and chairs that can seat up to 12. Keen cooks will delight in the well-planned kitchen, which has a breakfast bar, island unit and spectacular mountain views. There are two ground-floor bedrooms, both with king-size beds that can be made to form twin 2 ′6″ beds. Also on this floor are a shower room and utility room with a WC. A central open-tread staircase leads to two further super-king-size bedrooms, each with a double sofa bed and a breathtaking vista of the garden and mountains. One bedroom has an en-suite with a shower, while the other has an en-suite with a large, double-ended bath and WC. Both beds can be made into 3′ twin beds and, with the sofa beds, these bedrooms can easily be used as a family room for four (1 adult or 2 children), at extra cost - to be requested at time of booking.

A large patio terrace is Immediately outside the cottage, with outdoor dining furniture, a fire pit and stone-built charcoal BBQ, ideal for warm evenings. The extensive garden is enclosed, with a mountain stream and ponds on the far boundary, a perfect spot for a peaceful moment.

Lovely stay in a beautiful house and location. Well equipped and cosy. The hosts are very accommodating. Lots of activities in the area. We ate at the local pub one evening and the food was great, staff are extremely welcoming. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

We were a family group of 8 adults, with 2 dogs, and we had a lovely time at the Haybarn. It was a great location, central to many interesting places. The facilities were great. We had a fab time, and look forward to coming back.

All fantastic - my only non maximum score is whether we would go back again - it is a long way for us and we did go for a particular purpose that might not repeat itself in the future. But certainly were others to identify a trip to that part of the world I'd say this would be a brilliant base.
