Property code: OC-JBGILL

Dreamy stone cottages, buildings steeped in history, and an ancient church denote your arrival at Branscombe, its leafy valley leading to Lyme Bay and a long sweep of shingles flanked by pretty beach huts. Follow the South West Coast Path to enjoy dramatic views along the Jurassic Coast – the fishing village of Beer is less than 3 miles to the east. For day trips further afield, Sidmouth, a lively seaside town steeped in royal and architectural history, is an 8-mile drive to the west, while Honiton, 9 miles north, is regarded as the antique capital of the South West.

Enjoy a taste of country life at this chocolate-box thatched cottage. There’s not a straight wall in sight, but this skilfully renovated retreat is full of traditional features, with low ceilings, exposed beams, window seats and inglenook fireplaces all helping towards a warm welcome. An entrance hallway accessed from the garden leads into the kitchen/diner, where Shaker-style cabinets complement all the home-from-home essentials. Cooks will love working their magic here, and everyone will want to linger in the adjacent dining area where a wood burner-effect electric fire inside an original inglenook fireplace will cast a warm glow over the after-dinner conversation. A renowned 14th-century inn is on the doorstep for great food and local ales, but the spacious sitting room has sink-into sofas and an impressive inglenook fireplace with a wood burner-effect electric fire for relaxing evenings at home. There’s a TV, DVD and iPod docking station to entertain here, too. For ultra-convenience, there’s a cosy bunk-bedded room on the ground floor along with a stylish shower room, while, upstairs, there’s a spacious family bathroom and three peaceful bedrooms: two with double beds and one with twins. Thick stone walls, well-dressed windows and thermostatically controlled electric heaters will ensure comfortable slumbers.

Gorgeous valley views surround the cottage, while a gated gravelled driveway and mature lawn garden offer guests a private space outdoors in which to unwind.

We loved the cottage - it was cosy and clean, and was also well placed on footpaths, and very near the pub! We had some problem getting the hot water running initially, and even once we did have hot running water we found that it ran out quickly (we could only ever get the bath a quarter full before the water ran out for example). It would be good Read moreto have some information about the hot water in the info book in the cottage. Apart from this it was great! Hide

Gill Cottage was perfect for us, beautiful place and spotlessly clean. One small suggestion is that the outside furniture needs investment. A pub type table/ bench seat was very uncomfortable as no back support so sadly couldn't sit outside all evening for dinner/ drinks. Also, the property sleeps 8 and the seating is really only for 4 to eat comfoRead morertably. The host left milk, jam, cream & scones for us, a lovely touch. Would definitely revisit if garden furniture improved. The area is so pretty and pub next door is great with no noise surprisingly! Overall thoroughly recommend. Hide

Had a lovely stay in Gill Cottage. It's 35 steps to the entrance of the pub, which is great. Don't let this put you off, there is no real noise. It's just perfect if you don't want to cook or fancy a drink. The walks here are amazing! I banged my head a few times, the ceilings are low, but it was worth it. I would 100% recommend a stay.

Gill cottage was very relaxing and had a lovely friendly feel to it. The cottage was very clean. It was a very nice and welcoming thought of scones, jam , clotted cream, tea and coffee left for our arrival. Lovely garden to sit in and have your morning coffee. Will be booking this cottage again.

Excellent cottage in a superb location, a surprising number of roadworks with road closures caused problems but no reflection on the cottage.

It was a lovely cottage and had a great enclosed garden for the dogs (though we did go out with them as there could have been a few spaces to escape. We also liked that there were some good routes to the coastal walk. And of course, proximity to the pub :-) The only comments we had were that we couldn't find the hairdryer (we thought it was listedRead more as being available) and also the cold tap in the upstairs bathroom could do with being looked at as it was a bit loose. One of our children had a nose bleed in the night and the other wet the bed. We tried to rinse out any stains but didn't have any washing powder. Let me know if you've had any problems with washing the bedding. Sorry, this last few sentences weren't really a review, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to give you feedback in another way.
