Perfect for two families or a multi-generational getaway, this historic farmhouse and adjacent cottage share an acre of private grounds complete with a hot tub and panoramic views of Snowdonia and the coastline. Outdoorsy types will love all the activities on offer close by, while the secluded location promises a complete escape from the everyday for a party of 10 and two canine companions.

Follow a sweeping driveway downhill through a mile of farmland and then feast your eyes this impressive holiday pairing: two characterful properties where a party of friends or family can enjoy splendid isolation together. The substantial stone farmhouse retains many period features – flagstone floors and exposed beams among them – while providing every creature comfort for six guests. Leave walking boots, beach gear and outerwear in the boot room, then step into the open-plan lounge/diner where a wood burner and huge inglenook fireplace command attention. Stretch out on a sofa, turn on the Smart TV and unwind. If cooking is your passion, you can get creative then gather everyone in the pretty dining room to enjoy the fruits of your labour. A separate utility room houses laundry equipment as well as handy cloakroom facilities, and also on the ground floor is the first of four bedrooms – a lovely single with a double bed . Head upstairs and you’ll find three more bedrooms; choose from a king-size, a twin zip-and-link which can be made up as a super-king on request, and a small double. A stunning free-standing bath and separate shower are both in the main bathroom on this floor. Adjacent to farmhouse, the charming cottage has underfloor heating and magnificent views courtesy of its tall lounge windows. Unwind in front of the TV, or enjoy a meal cooked in your own kitchen before retiring to your choice of two bedrooms – one has a king-size bed and sea views, while the other is a cosy twin. A bespoke bathroom completes the self-sufficiency of this second property. The remote location means there’s more than enough space for everyone to let off steam here. Drink in the wonderful views while walking the acre of grounds, lying back in the hot tub, firing up the BBQ or unwinding by the firepit.

At the foot of the castle, the beach offers miles of golden sand where children and dogs can dash around; visit late in the day to experience breathtaking sunsets. Try walking the steepest street in the Northern Hemisphere, Ffordd Pen Llech, or follow the Wales Coast Path 4 miles south to Llanbedr – the route includes a winding section known as the Zig Zags where you’ll have fantastic bay views. For family fun at the seaside, head to Barmouth (10.5 miles) where a land train runs along the promenade and there are traditional donkey rides and amusement arcades.

Fantastic stay in the most peaceful setting. Did some great mountain hikes and strolls on the beaches in the surrounding area. Relaxing in the hot tub in the evening looking out over the most beautiful scenery topped off a great property. Will definitely return.

We have been lucky enough to stay in many self catering properties both abroad and in the UK, and we can honestly say, Harlech Retreat was outstanding. We stayed with family aged from 1 to 80 and the Retreat was absolutely perfect for everyone. The most spectacular view you could wish for, no matter what the weather and so much to do in the area. A wonderful home from home! Hide

This property is in one of the most beautiful situations possible. The view is huge! The accommodation is well designed and provided with anything visiting families could want. Three generations, the four youngest ranging from 6 years to one, had a brilliant time. Thank you
