Middleham, in Wensleydale, is widely credited with being one of Yorkshire’s loveliest towns. Famous for its castle, which was once home to Richard II, it is also known for its racehorse training and you will see horses being led through the village up to the gallops every day. Wander the town to discover a great collection of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops.
Just 2.5 miles out of the village is the fascinating Forbidden Corner. Regularly voted the best family attraction in Yorkshire, this is hugely popular because of its exciting labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. In the opposite direction, you’ll find the charming market town of Leyburn, 2 miles away, with its traditional shops, pubs and cafes around a handsome town square. As well as a busy market every Friday, the town is also home to the biggest auction centre outside of London. The nearby historic town of Richmond, 11 miles from the house, is another great option for a day out with its scenic setting along the River Swale.
There is a wealth of stunning natural sights and beauty spots all within close range, including Aysgarth Falls and Bolton Castle, both under 9 miles away. If walking is your passion, then the surrounding Yorkshire Dales are something of a walker’s paradise, with plenty of options for cycling too and a variety of excellent gastropubs for well-earned pit stops along the way. A drive further into the Yorkshire Dales reveals an abundance of chocolate-box villages to visit. Head to Kettlewell, 15 miles from Middleham, or Grassington, 21 miles away, to browse in independent shops and high-quality eateries.
