Hawkshead is held in great affection by literary lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers. With strong connections to Beatrix Potter who bequeathed much land and property to the National Trust, you’ll love wandering through the narrow winding streets past ancient lean-to buildings while finding original gifts in pretty artisan shops. Visit Potter’s farmhouse home at Hill Top or explore The World of Beatrix Potter, a popular attraction for younger visitors in nearby Bowness (9.5 miles). Fish for your supper at Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery (2.5 miles), or enjoy tree-top adventures in Grizedale Forest (3.5 miles). Visit

William Wordsworth’s Old Grammar School, and Hawkshead’s former courthouse. Discover Coniston Lake (3.5 miles), the enchanting Blea Tarn (7.5 miles), and the National Trust Tarn Hows (1.5 miles) where you can join Victorian-style boat cruises. Or head to Claife Heights Viewing Station (5 miles), for the most spectacular views over Lake Windermere. Families will love the 9-mile Windermere cycle route from Brockhole which includes a bike boat in high season to the lake’s western shore for largely traffic-free woodland routes.

The house was excellent and very comfortable. All the rooms were a very good size. The beds were very comfortable and the showers were excellent. The cottage is lovely, just on the outskirts of Hawkshead village. There are quite a few light bulbs out, basic stuff that needs doing, and also one of the radiator thermostats (in the dining room) is broken off. There is also quite a large stain on the carpet at the top of the stairs on the 1st floor near the radiator. Lastly, a bad smell from theRead more big double bedrooms bathroom.
