Covering a huge area of south west France, Nouvelle Aquitaine was formed from the merger of Aquitaine, Poitou Charente and Limousin. With the Pyrenees to the south and Atlantic to the west, it encompasses a variety of landscapes and makes an interesting destination for a French holiday.
Biarritz on the coast to the south, close to the border with Spain, is a surfing mecca, frequented by thousands of surfers each year, enticed by the promise of one of the best waves in Europe.
North of Biarritz, the Landes department houses a huge man-made pine forest, perfect for woodland walks and cycling. Above this, the Gironde region is celebrated for its wines, with Bordeaux providing a focal point. Arcachon Bay offers a unique experience of the Atlantic, with the huge sand dune, Dune du Pilat’ to the south, oyster beds supplying deliciously fresh oysters and glorious sandy beaches.
Inland Occitanie reveals medieval treasures in Lot-et-Garonne, as well as popular Dordogne region, whose prehistoric caves, stunning Chateaux and beautiful river have much to offer the adventurous visitor.
To the north, Limousin and Charente are mainly farmlands and vineyards, while Vienne is home to Poitiers and the Futuroscope theme park with its tech and cinematographic attractions.
The relaxing department of Deux-Sèvres with its beautiful countryside and Marais Poitevin marshland lies alongside Vienne, and Charente Maritime completes the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Encompassing pretty La Rochelle, historic Rochefort and vibrant Royan, it has much to offer visitors, not least the Marennes-Oléron oysters, a delicacy of the region.
