Perched high above the glistening water of Lake Como, this Liberty-style villa commands one of the finest views in Europe. With no immediate neighbours, this private paradise is an idyllic destination for special occasions; watch glorious golden sunsets unfold from the heated infinity pool, sip cocktails in the bar and enjoy some friendly competition in the billiards lounge. Built in 1909 on the site of a former medieval watchtower, this vast villa is rich in history, but minimalist decor strikes a tranquil tone.

Sitting even higher than the seaplanes that fly from Como, the balconies from the villa’s eight decadent bedrooms all enjoy breathtaking vistas of the calm blue lake surrounded by lush mountain peaks. Up to 14 guests can wake up to this dreamy scene, before tucking into an al fresco breakfast in the warm Mediterranean sunshine on one of the two rooftop terraces. A yoga room which has been carved into the cliff face offers an oasis of calm, a perfect way to start your day.

An elevator inside the villa allows you to easily explore its three main floors: the majority of the bedrooms are spread over the first and second floors, while the third floor is home to an extraordinary open space with two large seating areas, a kitchenette, and a wealth of entertainment including a pool table. When it comes to dining, you have a choice of seating areas including a formal dining room inside the villa or a variety of al fresco options – beneath the pergola on the sweeping terrace overlooking the lake is sure to be a favourite.

Enveloped by 4.5 acres of landscaped gardens and fragrant forest, there is plenty of space outside to enjoy some peace and tranquillity on your luxury Italian break. A 22-metre long infinity pool with attached jacuzzi offers ultimate relaxation, and seemingly floating on its surface, is a pool house which has a kitchen, island bar and seating area where you can curl up with a holiday read.

LOCAL AREA: Although secluded, this northern Italian villa is only 300 metres from the picturesque mountain village of Pigra which offers a couple of restaurants and is a perfect base for hiking and mountain biking. The popular lakeside village of Argegno can be reached within about 4 minutes from the cable car station, located 500 metres from the villa gates. A wonderful selection of cafes and shops cluster by the water, and it is here that you will find the villa’s own private boat mooring and a scheduled river taxi service, ideal for exploring all that Lake Como has to offer.

There is no better way to admire the splendour of Lake Como than by being on the water. Spend a morning exploring the lake by boat, stopping for a refreshing swim in the water, then enjoy lunch in a waterside bistro before returning to the villa by late afternoon. If you spend the mornings on the west side and the afternoons on the east side of the lake, you will always stay in the sun.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: There are a variety of quaint and characterful towns and villages surrounding Lake Como that are a must-visit during your holiday. Bellagio is known as the ‘pearl of the lake’ and this historic town offers beautiful waterfront promenades and two gardens to explore. Menaggio has small stretches of shingle beach and from here you can travel to the glistening waters of Lake Lugano.

At the fishing village of Varenna, you can admire views from the Castello di Vezio or simply relax by the peaceful lakeside. And at the walled town of Como, you can discover the impressive cathedral with Gothic and Renaissance features, the town's earlier cathedral, San Fedele, and the Romanesque church Sant'Abbondio. The town's art gallery (Pinacoteca) is also worth a visit.

Wherever you are, you’re never far from great shopping and the finest Italian cuisine – head down the back streets and explore old lakeside towns to find some of the less well-known but excellent restaurants. And when you need to burn off all those calories, there is a wealth of outdoor activities on offer such as mountain biking, hiking, boating, paragliding, windsurfing and golf.

GETTING THERE: Nearest airport: Lugano International Airport (35km). Nearest train station: Como San Giovanni (37km).
