A former four-star hotel, this 19th-century chateau in the small village of Lagraulet in Gascony, at the heart of the Gers region has been transformed into a luxury country retreat, surrounded by ancient moats and private parkland. Beautifully decorated, it has been sympathetically renovated using original materials including limestone walls, giant oak beams and flagstone floors. Indeed, you will feel as though you have stepped back in time, with views from the chateau out to the ramparts of the castle, dating back to the 14th-century. Offering seven stylish en-suite bedrooms sleeping up to 18 guests and with its very own outside swimming pool and indoor mini spa, this is the perfect retreat for a relaxing holiday with family and friends.

The first thing you’ll notice upon entering this elegant chateau is the exquisite styling, perfectly suited to a French country home. A variety of social spaces greet you, including a large drawing room with roaring log fire to while away long winter afternoons, a handsome bar and TV lounge with open fire – perfect for after-dinner games, and an atmospheric dining room seating 17 guests, also with open fire. A ground floor en-suite bedroom is available for less mobile guests, while six bedrooms, four of which are suites, are situated on the first floor. All are beautifully designed in a contemporary yet rustic boutique style, with sumptuous linens and soft furnishings accentuating stone walls and vintage furniture - you will have difficulty choosing a favourite! All of the bedrooms boast views out onto historic towers, to the pretty woodland or out to the village, adding to the tranquil air of this most charming of properties.

Outside, a 20m swimming pool awaits guests for early morning dips and afternoons of fun with the family. For those who like a spot of fishing, there are ancient moats which can be used by guests, while the private grounds surrounding the chateau are the perfect place for a late afternoon stroll. Wander the estate before retreating inside for pre-dinner drinks in front of the fire in the warm and welcoming drawing room. The house also has a lift from the ground floor to the first floor for convenience of guests.

SLEEPS 18: This property offers seven bedrooms all with en-suite facilities, four of which are suites, one with a private sauna and Balneo spa bath for two. The ground floor has a double bedroom with electric bed and its own private entrance and access to a terrace – this room is ideal for guests with reduced mobility. The first floor is home to the remaining six bedrooms - two doubles with queen-sized beds and four suites all with queen-size beds. Two of the suites also have an extra single bed and one of the suites has two extra single beds, perfect for those with little ones. All bedrooms have air conditioning, TV (French national channels only) and hairdryer.

COOK + DINE: In the kitchen, there are two electric cookers, an oven, a fridge, freezer and an ice machine for cool drinks, and a wine cellar. There is also a dishwasher, toaster and coffee machine. Enjoy meals in the dining room or hire the concierge service (at extra cost) who will organise a private chef or restaurant bookings if you wish to take a night off. A highchair is also available for a toddler to join you at the table.

RELAX: There are various areas to relax, including a large drawing room and bar/TV lounge, both with working fireplaces (wood provided during the winter). For some pampering, head into the mini spa with a jacuzzi on the ground floor for four people and sauna for two. You can of course, head out to the swimming pool to do some lengths if you need to work off the calories after all of that wonderful cuisine!

BATHE: All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and private WCs – the ground floor bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and private WC. The two doubles and four suites on the first floor also have en-suite bathrooms and private WCs, and one of the suites also has a Balneo spa bath for two, shower and sauna for one person.

OUTSIDE: Surrounding the house are enclosed private grounds as well as a fenced swimming pool (20mx4.2mx1.3m) which has poolside loungers during the summer season, Badminton and a BBQ. The house is surrounded by antique moats, now preserved natural ecosystems where guests may fish. There is also private parking.

TECH: Air conditioning and TVs in all bedrooms (French national channels only). Computer with Wi-Fi in drawing room and Wi-Fi video projector in the drawing room. Wi-Fi throughout house.

PLAY: Outside swimming pool and indoor ground floor mini spa to relax. The concierge (extra charge) can organise wonderful days out including wine and Armagnac tastings, cultural tours, bike rentals, air balloon tours, yoga and aqua gym classes amongst others. You can also book wine tasting with the on-site oenologist or beauty treatments such as facials and massages.

PETS: 2 dogs welcome. €30 per dog per day.

 

Local area: The area of Castlepierre is a wonderful place to take a break – it is just 8km from the nearest village of Montreal du Gers where you will find a bar, restaurant and grocery store. The Gers is known for its gastronomy and historic places to visit and welcomes nearly 2 million visitors per year. Try the Auberge du Lac just a couple of minutes away for its delicious food, or The Baise Gardens in Condom with its wonderful terrace, perfect for sunny afternoons. There are so many little cafés and restaurants in nearby villages and towns, you will find it hard to choose a favourite.

Visit the historic village of Fourcés, the fortified medieval village of Laressingle, known as one of the most beautiful villages in France and visit historic monuments – the Gallo-Roman Villa of Séviac with its exquisite mosaics and thermal baths, the 12th-century Flaran Abbey and the Baths and Casinos of Castera Verduzan, Barbotan and Lectoure.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: A much sought-after destination, the area around the chateau has plenty to do for all age of visitor. Take gastro tours of the markets and restaurants, and the vineyards of course – visit organic food markets and delightful evening markets, local breweries and farms to discover the freshest produce. Discover charming fortified villages with antique shops to explore and cafés to rest in, and don’t miss the summer music festivals – highlights are a popular jazz festival in Marciac which welcomes top names and Tempo Latino in Vic-Fezansac for something with a little more fire.

Adrenaline seekers can head to the Nogaro driving circuit or why not take a balloon flight over the Gers to see the sights from above? If you prefer something a little more relaxing, tee off at the 18-hole Guinlet golf course which offers breathtaking views of the Pyrenees or if you want to take the weight off your feet, hop aboard one of the 40 horses and ponies at the Au Galauzoue stables for a hack around the local area.
