Chateau de Marouatte

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Chateau de Marouatte is a stunning, 14th Century fortified castle which has been recently restored as a luxury family home. The chateau is available for private self-catering hire, and has inspired many musicians, painters and writers. Standing in its own 240-acre estate in the Dordogne region of Perigord, it has absolutely spectacular views.

This is a captivating venue for a big group get-together, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or are simply on holiday. The house is beautifully restored, every room decorated to the very highest standard and packed with original features and antiques. Within the estate there is a heated swimming pool, an all-weather tennis court and lots of beautiful walks.

The fourteen bedrooms sleep up to 30 guests, and the rooms are split over five different areas (wings and towers), making the property ideal for groups or families sharing. Additional bedrooms available in the main castle should the castle not exceed 15 guests.

An impressive list of previous guests includes the Queen Mother, Sir Edward Heath, Cher, Marillion, Rick Astley, Carole King, Stewart Copeland, Jools Holland, Brian Adams, Jeff Beck and Zucchero.

You can live like a king at Marouatte, enjoying opulent four poster bedrooms with decorative canopies and curtains, antique furnishings, period-style bathrooms, and lots of oil paintings and tapestries. Despite the grandeur of the décor, however, the rooms are sunny and blissfully comfortable.

Chapel Wing:

The main living accommodation is here in the Chapel Wing where you'll find the large entrance hall, dining hall, library/den and kitchen.

The kitchen, with its arched stone ceiling, is beautifully equipped and an absolute joy to cook in. The library is ideal for quieter moments, with its lovely stone fireplace, its tapestries and a wall frieze decorated with medieval heraldic scenes. The Dining Hall will make any big group meal a special occasion. It is a wonderful room, with a vaulted ceiling, a wooden fireplace and doors, and lots of ornately carved cabinets.

On the first and second floor are the Master Suite and two bedrooms. The Master Bedroom has a king-size four poster bed.

A spiral staircase leads to the second floor and four more bedrooms. These are all similarly beautiful, tastefully decorated on different themes: the Blue Room, the Gothic Room, the Renaissance Room and the Garden Room. Two are ensuite, the other two have use of a large bathroom.

The Cloche Tower:

Here you’ll find the Games Room, a stunning room with the most amazing decorative painted ceiling. The Salle d’Honeur is also here (a Gothic-style living room with suits of armour and medieval weapons hanging on the walls), and two more luxury bedrooms. These are two identical and very ornate rooms, named after their special guest, the Queen Mother.

The Garden Tower:

Ideal for family groups, this is literally a fairytale-looking tower, accessed from the garden and main terrace, with uninterrupted views of forest and valley. It has a double room (with WC and basin) and a king-size en suite room.

The Maiden’s Tower:

Similarly romantic, this tower has the remaining two bedrooms, both double rooms with washbasins. There is a bathroom on the lower ground floor, accessible down a stone spiral staircase.

The kitchen has a dishwasher, huge American style fridge/freezer plus drinks fridge and spare chest freezer, microwave and coffee machine. The original fireplace is home to a Godin gas hob and electric oven, and also incorporates a wood-burning stove and an oven. A cellar, accessed from the kitchen, can be used for storing supplies and wine.

There is a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utilities room off the Entrance Hall.

The Games Room has a full-size pool table, table football, shelves of books, TV and DVD player.

Leading from the terrace is a more formal garden in which the heated pool is set against a backdrop of crenellated towers and pointed castle spires. Other outside facilities include the tennis court, a BBQ and plenty of garden furniture.

Children are very welcome. Two cots and two high chairs are available. Babysitting can be organised (local charge).
