This idyllic château is found on a large private estate near Anjou in the Pays de la Loire region. The luxury property has been owned by the same family for the last seven generations, offering four-star accommodation for over three decades. Amongst its illustrious guests over the years are the 18th century writer and political thinker Madame de Stael, author George Sand, and the composer Frédéric Chopin.

The property is well-situated for enjoying either a relaxing and restful stay, or a culturally stimulating visit off the beaten track. There are 17 bedrooms in total located across the château itself, the Orangery, and the Lodge Cabin accommodating a total of 36 guests. The Orangery is situated 50 metres from the Château and it houses six double bedrooms each of which have been decorated on-trend and the Lodge Cabin is hidden from view of the château and is designed to accommodate up to two adults and two children on a sofa bed. Ideal for family holidays or even romantic weekend getaways to the French countryside, this hotel can be booked in its entirety or by the room. Guests are invited to book the venue exclusively for weddings, receptions, seminars, family celebrations and feature film shoots too. The château is surrounded by a 50-hectare park planted with English trees which is open for guests to explore to their heart’s content. There are some attractive opportunities to enjoy some horse riding, cycling, tennis, ping pong and billiards on site. There is also a heated outdoor swimming pool and a trampoline to exercise and have fun with.

SLEEPS 36: 17 bedrooms across the Château, Orangery and the Lodge Cabin: Château: 10 en-suite bedrooms; 9 doubles, 6 of which can be arranged as twins and 1 family suite with a double bed and linked to a smaller room with bunkbeds. The Orangery: 6 double bedrooms; 3 of the six rooms can be combined to make a larger apartment with a shared bathroom (ideal for families), the other 3 rooms are independent with their own bathroom. The rear section of the Orangery opens onto the swimming pool and tennis court areas for convenience. The Lodge Cabin: A mezzanine hosts a double bed and a free-standing bath. There is a sofa-bed on the ground floor most suitable for children. This accommodation’s layout includes a sauna, shower and separate toilets on the ground floor. A mezzanine hosts a double bed and a free-standing bath.

COOK + DINE: Château d’Anjou can be hired on a self-catering basis, or fully catered during summer months at an additional cost. Fully equipped kitchen and large dining room in the Château only.

RELAX: This Château has 3 reception rooms, the grand salon with antique furniture and an open fireplace, a further living area with soft seating and a TV, and a library with billiards table. The Orangery has its own living area with fireplace and soft seating.

LOCAL AREA: Château d'Anjou is the perfect place from which to explore this historic region in the Pays de la Loire region. Further afield in Angers, you must see the tapestries of the Apocalypse of the 12th century, which are the only surviving examples in the world! From Château d'Anjou, on the banks of the Loire, you can admire the tuffeau stone villages of the Saumur area, the troglodyte villages, the Abbey of Cunault, Fontevraud, and the castle of Montreuil Bellay. Also within driving distance is the beautiful city of Grenoble, which is also the gateway to the Alps. To the north is Lyon which is a good city for shopping and cultural experiences.

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: Spend a day exploring some of the half-dozen beautiful châteaux in Pays de la Loire. Take an interest in local history and stop by the museums or simply while away your time losing yourself along the byways of Anjou. Anjou is also home to some abbeys, botanical gardens, extraordinary churches and close to delightful little villages. Château d'Anjou is located between three rivers, the Mayenne, the Sarthe and the Loire – so there is a scope for some lovely waterside walks. Wine lovers rejoice, it is possible to visit some of the region’s vineyards for a taste of some local fare.
