With the medieval village of St Paul de Vence on one side and an expanse of glittering ocean on the other, this hilltop boutique-hotel style villa couldn’t be in a more superb location. In an area surrounded by acres of forest and little villages peppered with beautiful shops and excellent restaurants, this property is also an easy drive from a handful of chic Mediterranean coastal resorts. Mornings are made for popping into the village for fluffy croissants and a browse around the numerous art galleries, either a 30 minute stroll or a 10 minute drive. And a little drive away, the town of Vence with its sunset-coloured 15th century walls enveloping a myriad of little streets and market square, is the perfect place to enjoy a long lazy lunch followed by a visit to some of the region’s most interesting historical monuments.

Wrapped around a sparkling aquamarine swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and exotic plants, this contemporary villa welcomes guests with open arms. Reclaimed materials from the ruins of an old monastery give the property an authentic rustic style yet the bright and colourful furniture lends a modern touch. On balmy summer nights, a spacious open-plan living space leading to an outdoor terrace is the ideal place to have pre-dinner drinks before heading outside to dine under the stars. Cooler nights can be spent in the well-equipped kitchen, whipping up meals made with ingredients from the local market, before retiring to the living area and cosying up in front of a roaring fire.

The villa comprises various independent suites and en-suite bedrooms, giving guests a sense of privacy and independence. There is a suite able to sleep 4 guests, a penthouse suite which can sleep four guests, offering a bedroom, sitting room with sofa bed, kitchen and bathroom; a family suite with two bedrooms, bathroom and living room/kitchen; a master suite which can sleep four guests (including a sofa bed) with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and sitting room with sofa bed and fireplace; and two en-suite double bedrooms with a shared terrace and small seating area on the lower level. All bedrooms have a private or shared terrace with sea views, meaning that everybody can wake up to the ocean.

Outside, spacious terraces and grassy lawns surround the saltwater pool, a perfect space for families and friends to get together. When the sun goes down, grab your rackets and head to the floodlit courts for a friendly game of tennis. Those requiring something a little more gentle can play a game of petanque on the sandy court, followed by a leisurely drink at the covered bar before settling down to dinner on one of the outside terraces.

LOCAL AREA: The nearest town of Vence is one of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera and an easy drive from some of Southern France’s most popular coastal resorts. With a delightful selection of shops, cafes and excellent restaurants, it will tempt you in with its authentic and unglossy vibe. You’ll feel that you’ve stepped back in time as you wander down in the morning to buy pastries from the bakery and browse the traditional market stalls in the Place du Grand Jardin square. From the little old shops that have seen generations come and go to the bars and eateries that welcome guests old and new with open arms, you’ll feel that you have discovered a real hidden treasure. The more touristy village of Saint Paul de Vence is nearer to the property and well worth a browse. For something more glamorous and buzzy, you can drive down to Monte Carlo (45 km) and Cannes (31 km).

ACTIVITIES NEARBY: Keen golfers will love Vence as there are approximately ten golf courses within 30 minutes of the town. Other activities on offer are a selection of water sports at the coast, cycling, hiking, riding, fishing and for those who want something a little more relaxing, mini-golf. Vence has some great contemporary art galleries where you can buy inexpensive artwork. Why not walk down to the beautiful and tranquil 11th century Cathedrale Notre Dame de la Nativite, the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, Matisse’s last great work or the peaceful art museum of Fondation Maeght on the outskirts of the town? Nature lovers will be mesmerised by Le Vallon du Brec gardens 10 km from the house as well as the Marineland d’Antibes site of natural beauty, 12 km away.
