For something a little more fast-paced, the local area offers an abundance of sporting activities from mountain biking to sailing, riding and golfing. Step back in time with a visit to the 18th-century market town of Castle Douglas, home to many independent shops and eateries or pay a visit to the nearby island fortress of Threave Castle. A designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Solway Coast is home to salt marshes, sandy beaches and varied colonies of wildlife.

Inside, this property harks back to its past through characterful fireplaces, ceiling cornicing, original windows and decorative tapestries. On the ground floor, a welcoming entrance hall opens into a spacious living room complete with open fire for those chillier evenings and a TV with Blu-ray to keep everyone entertained. The traditional farmhouse-style kitchen with range oven and dining area opens onto the garden through patio doors. This room is fitted with an electric oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, microwave and Rayburn. More formal meals are best enjoyed in the grand dining room, which is furnished with an antique table and chairs fit for special celebrations. Ideal for families, there are four twin bedrooms together with a family bathroom and Jack and Jill bathroom with overhead shower.

With a burn running by, the garden offers a picturesque spot for enjoying summer picnics on the patio. Depending on the weather, choose between a game of tennis outside or take to the games room complete with open fire and sofa and chairs, for an afternoon of billiards, darts or table tennis.

This is a large and splendid old farmhouse set in beautiful countryside with great views, a large garden, tennis court and great games room. House - comfortable and functional with lots of space. Games room and tennis court were great additions for all weather entertainment. Kitchen never failed on us for group eating requirements. A little dated in the decorating department - perhaps just the bedrooms could be updated? Area - very rural and quiet. 30 mins to the heart of Galloway ForesRead moret and about the same to the coast to provide great walking and cycling. Castle Douglas 10 minutes in car for shopping. Places visited - Cally at Gatehouse of Fleet, cycled the old railway from Mossdale to Big Water of Fleet viaduct and back, cream of Galloway for the kids, red kite trail, galloway activity centre for water slide and climbing and a meal at Mr Pooks were all worthwhile. The house was really wonderful. The advance arrangements were really easy with Linda and the directions were excellent and the house was easy to find. When we arrived the place was all warmed up and there was even a fire going. There was plenty of space for everyone and a huge stack of firewood to see us through the week and the house was really quRead moreiet. There was also lots to do in the area - we went to Threave Castle and nature reserve, pottered around Sandyhills beach, did a walk at Auchencairn, saw deer while off-road biking and even managed some star gazing in the dark sky park - it's a great area with loads to do - would definitely recommend it.
