Leave your luggage in the hall and head on through to discover where the fun will take place over the coming days. Make your way into the kitchen/diner, for example, where you can take turns at whipping up hearty feasts and then gather round the table to enjoy them together. Open the doors on to the garden in here on sunny days so everyone can wander outside. Find a handy utility room close by, plus a ground-floor WC. Try the 8-mile walk to Instow, for example, which takes you along the Taw and Torridge Estuary, via Bideford and Appledore. Those who prefer pottering in shops and art galleries, and pausing for tea and scones in cafes, might prefer to spend an afternoon in Appledore, which is just 2.5 miles from your base and known for its pretty, narrow streets and independent shops. From here you can also catch a ferry over to Instow in the high season.

The property was in a good location within walking distance of the front - but a bit of a climb back up. The house was very comfortable and well equipped, with a lovely enclosed garden.
