This holiday home has a great location, set at the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales and 28 miles from Middlesborough, it's an ideal basecamp from which to strike out and discover these unique Yorkshire locations. Reeth (14 miles) and the stunning landscapes of Swaledale (7 miles) and Arkengarthdale (21 miles) are within easy reach.

The cottage is set in the heart of a very pretty village. If you're a bit of a foodie there are several excellent dining pubs in the area as well as a deli, tea room and farm shop. It's also the perfect location if you enjoy walking, there are lots of beautiful routes from the doorstep and its known as a great starting point for walking - seasoned ramblers come from miles around to set off from the village.

North of the village is the charming town of Barnard Castle (12 miles). The excellent Bowes Museum is here and is worth a visit and, as the name would suggest, there's a historic castle to explore too.

This stunning large luxury cottage is also just 4 miles away from Richmond, a historic market town with much to offer the discerning holidaymaker. Explore the cobbled market square or head up towards Richmond Castle for a slice of Yorkshire history. Just a short drive through Richmond takes you into the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Head up towards Reeth (15 miles) and on towards Hawes (29 miles) in Wensleydale for a true taste of this magnificent countryside.

Further south, you'll find the pretty market town of Northallerton (20 miles) where handsome Georgian houses line the long main street.

To take in the North York Moors, travel 40 miles and brave it up Sutton Bank, the view from the top is said by some to be the finest in all of England but we doubt you’ll want to travel far when you can lounge at this beautiful property.

We had a great stay. It was lovely for the family to come together for the weekend. The house was clean and big enough for all of us. 11 adults and 5 kids. Kitchen had everything you could need. This seemed to be our main gathering point. The weather was not so good. But grounds looked amazing. The kid made use of the tree swing.

A great place to stay with plenty of room for a larger party. The standard of the equipment provided in the kitchen and bedrooms was fab, no need to bring anything other than your suitcases and food if you want. The grounds around the house are well kept and provide an excellent outdoor space if you wanted to bbq or sit and enjoy yourself. We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend at Gilling Lodge. The house is beautiful, comfortable and even more spacious than the pictures suggest. We had read two fairly recent reviews raising concerns about cleanliness, but any problems in this respect had been fully addressed: we found the house clean and well cared for. Wow. Gilling Lodge is an absolutely stunning place. We were blown away from start to finish. We stayed for a celebration and it was so private and we were able to make the event personal to us. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and would definitely recommend this home to anyone. I will definitely re book in the future.

The house and gardens are beautiful, great for a large family gathering and set in an amazing location but as mentioned in the previous review the house does need a better clean, especially with Covid.

The house, location and gardens are all amazing. The house is huge with many beautiful features. Gardens are absolutely beautiful with wonderful scented flowers. Excellent for large group. The house does need a better clean as described above especially considering Covid times. I understand this is being addressed.
