Lace up your walking boots, make some sandwiches and head out on foot or by bicycle to explore your Scottish surroundings. Find plenty of footpaths and trails in the area, taking you beside rivers, over hills and through areas of forest.
Make two or three trips into Edinburgh during your stay to ensure you are really able to experience the city. Visit Arthur’s Seat, the impressive castle and the Royal Mile, as well as the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. You have a wonderful array of eateries to choose from here as well.
Melrose, 22 miles away, is also worth visiting for the day. Here you can see the impressive ruins of Melrose Abbey, which date back to 1136. The National Trust for Scotland gardens, Priorwood and Harmony Gardens, are also here and are well worth visiting. Keen walkers might also like to attempt one of the triple peaks of the nearby Eildon Hills while they are in the area.
Venture 17 miles to Prestonpans to spend time on the beach. This is a great place to walk and make sandcastles. Portobello Beach, 15.5 miles away, is another family-friendly beach and is popular with swimmers on warm days.
