Let yourselves into this Scottish castle, where Prime Minister William Gladstone and his family once lived. Dating back to the 19th century, it is overflowing with exquisite features and has ample space for members of your party to spread out. Wander through the breathtaking reception hall, with its beautiful staircase. Gaze out over the leafy estate from the lounge as an open fire crackles in the background. Play snooker or watch TV in the billiards room and prepare feasts of delicious Scottish fare in the modern kitchen, which has been fitted with everything you need. Then dine together up in the impressive entertaining room on the first floor. Find there is also a WC and study downstairs before you head up to the first floor and on through the castle to discover the dining room, library and a series of magnificent bedrooms and bathrooms. Savour the natural beauty of your surroundings and plan long walks through the scenic countryside in which this Aberdeenshire castle nestles. Drive approximately 10 miles to the Scottish coast at St Cyrus, where you can walk along the sandy beach and gaze up at the craggy cliffs, which are home to colonies of seabirds.

Spend an afternoon or two in Montrose, 14 miles away, where you can potter in the interesting independent shops and pick up produce from the farmers’ market, which is held on the first Saturday of the month. Dine out here too in a pub or restaurant serving homecooked Scottish fare. Have a long walk at the Montrose Basin Wildlife Centre or head down to the town’s sandy beach. Golf enthusiasts might like to have a game or two on the Montrose Links, known for the impressive sea views.

Visit the charming harbour town of Stonehaven, 19 miles away, then drive 2 miles south to see the notable ruins of much photographed Dunnottar Castle. Head 20 miles from the castle to enjoy a day out at RSPB Scotland Fowlsheugh, where you can walk out along the cliffs and gaze out to sea, looking for seals, dolphins and minke whales.
