Step through the property’s ancient oak door and you’ll find yourself in a beautiful medieval hall with a huge open fireplace and lovely flagged floor – an impressive welcome to a historic home, if ever there was one. Next you’ll find a wonderful wood-panelled dining room and a large well-equipped kitchen where you’ll find everything you need to cook up a fabulous feast for your party. An inner hallway leads to a connecting door to the property’s garden-view annexe, which has a large lounge area, kitchen and two en-suite bedrooms – the perfect place for those members of your party who enjoy a little privacy. Back in the main house, head up the wide oak staircase to the first-floor landing where you’ll enter into a beautiful drawing room with a wonderful open fireplace and a large window overlooking the garden below. Next you’ll find four further bedrooms, one of which boasts exquisite Tudor panelling and a decorative fireplace. A second narrow staircase leads up to the second floor where you’ll find a further two lovely bedrooms. Head into the Saxon hilltop town of Shaftesbury (8 miles), where you’ll find the gorgeous Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street that has been described as ‘one of the most romantic sights in England’. Featured in countless films and TV shows, it’s one of the most famous streets in England - and it’s certainly one of the prettiest. History buffs will enjoy exploring Shaftesbury Abbey Museum and Garden (7.5 miles), where you’ll find the excavated foundations of a once influential abbey within a peaceful walled garden. Outdoor enthusiasts will adore a hike at Melbury Beacon (7.5 miles), where you’ll discover an open expanse of flowery down land, excellent butterfly populations and magnificent views.

This is a truly stunning big house. We enjoyed our time there immensely. Absolutely perfectly fitted out for setting up a feast with a huge dining table. The rooms are very comfortable - it's a privilege to live in such a historic house. The grounds are beautiful too - with excellent walks available on the estate. It was a stunning setting for our Read morebirthday celebrations. Everyone involved in the rental of this mansion was super-helpful and helped to make the whole time there perfect. Hide

Wonderful place for a family celebration. All our guests commented on their beautiful rooms and comfortable beds. The Hall and reception rooms were perfect too, and great to have a large country kitchen for relaxed breakfasts.
