See and do
With so many options you could spend a whole month exploring all Crete has to offer and not see everything. There are some definite must see's for any visitor though. Hiring a car for your stay will afford you the luxury of being able to explore off beat parts of the island, journeying from town to villages through lush valleys, up mountains and along the coast.

The Samaria Gorge is the longest and most arguably beautiful gorge in Europe. Around 11 miles long, a walk through wild flowers, trees and fragrant herbs will have your senses tingling and spotting wild goats and birds of prey will be special highlight. Travel back in time when visiting the ancient ruins of Minoan civilization at the Palace of Knossos, the ruins of Gournia or the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. With so much history you can see many fascinating artefacts around the island, most local churches welcome visitors to look around.

The palm tree beach, or officially called Vai is on the edge of a 2000 year old palm tree forest, the only one in Europe. The protected tropical beach is popular with tourists but is only open sunrise to sunset. Another beach to top your list should be Falassarna, this 3 km exotic beach has won many awards for being the best beach in Europe. With 3 km of pink-like sand meeting the crystal clear water makes for the perfect day on a perfect beach.

History and myths of Crete

Crete was at the heart of the Minoan civilization from 2600 – 1150 BC, a sophisticated society with their own Navy. The Minoan society started to decline after Santorini's volcano erupted and they were later superseded by the Mycenaean's from the mainland. You can see ancient sites around the island from this time period in forms of palace ruins, sacred sites and tombs. Crete was invaded by the Romans from 69 – 330 AC which, along with the Byzantine era, brought wealth to the island which can still be seen through the many monuments and mosaics still around today. Fast forward to 1941 and Crete was victim to an airborne attack by Germany, parts of the island were so heavily bombed you can still see the damage to some of the towns and buildings.

From the Minoans to the Romans, Crete is synonymous with mythical legends and powerful Gods. The birth place of Zeus, Minos and where the Minotaur is said to have been defeated by Athenian prince Theseus, there is plenty to set your imagination on fire.
