Benajarafe, Malaga, Spain
Benajarafe, Province of Malaga, Andalucia, Spain
Number of guests
Sleeps up to 24 (extra guests can be accommodated at Hostal Esperanza, about 1.5 miles away).
Property description
A beautiful Spanish hacienda, built around a cool courtyard with a fountain and plenty of fragrant foliage. The house is divided into four separate villas, each with its own entrance. This makes it very flexible accommodation, either for several families holidaying together or a big group of friends. The house has its own art studio with a kiln and a pottery wheel, and can be booked with a painting/pottery package through Spain At Heart (see below).
There are plenty of sun terraces and delightful gardens where children can play in complete safety. These are surrounded by ten acres of mangoes, lemons, oranges, lychees, olives and figs that contribute towards a working fruit farm. The nearest beaches are just over a mile away.
Location
La Finca stands in the peaceful hamlet of Benajarafe Alto, surrounded by Andalucian countryside. The village has two distinct parts – the coastal area with restaurants, shops and beaches etc; and the residential part, about 1.5 miles inland, which is where you’ll find La Finca.
Accommodation
Each villa has its own, fully equipped modern kitchen, either one or two bath or shower rooms, a patio, comfortable bedrooms and sitting rooms with open fireplaces.
The Finca sleeps 24 altogether, in four double and eight twin bedrooms. Two of the villas have two bedrooms, and two have four. There are six bathrooms.
Facilities
Facilities include a large swimming pool and a toddler’s pool, surrounded by lawns, terraces, pergolas and gardens. There is also an all-weather tennis court as well as two permanent barbecues and an electric kiln for pottery tuition.
Spain at Heart (see below) has an excellent Spanish cook who can prepare meals during your stay if you wish. It can even organise a party for you, with flamenco and/or blues groups.
You could also happily host a conference or small company meeting here, for up to 24. And it is an ideal base from which to learn Spanish, with an excellent language school nearby (http://www.communicaschool.com).
Art Courses: The Finca provides a wonderful base for a painting holiday with bright, Mediterranean light, dappled shade and blue skies. The house has a well-equipped art studio, a potter’s wheel and a computer-controlled kiln. During your stay, visits to local villages can be arranged, to paint or sketch. In addition you can book a package, which includes organised trips to Granada, Cordoba and Malaga.
Area
Some thirty minutes from Malaga airport, the area around the Finca del Niño is known as the Axarquia. This is Spain as it used to be, an area famous for its wine, olive oil and, more recently, tropical fruit – mangoes, avocados, lychees and guavas. Along the coast there are safe, sandy beaches with friendly merenderos selling sizzling sardines. And just a few miles inland you can find little whitewashed villages and harnessed pairs of oxen tilling the fields.
Benajarafe is a fishing village with a good little supermarket and numerous small restaurants (so reasonably priced they make you think twice about eating in). Puerto Niza Beach Club & Restaurant, just outside the village, is the place for a romantic dinner under the stars. If you are looking for nightlife, there are lots of restaurants in Torre Del Mar (15 minutes’ drive) and discos overlooking the sea.
For the active there are various sports on offer, including sailing, jet skiing, fishing, Go Karting, and riding/trekking in the hills. The Anoreta and Baviera Golf Clubs are ten minutes away, and three further courses within a 30-minute drive. Windsurfing and scuba diving are available in Nerja.
The more cultural aspects of Andalucia are within easy daytrip reach. These include Seville; the enormous Mosque at Cordoba; and the old Spanish town of Malaga, definitely not to be underestimated, a beautiful city with tropical parks and well-kept beaches. It was also the birthplace of Picasso, and has two museums devoted to him, including the new, spectacular Picasso Museum. Allow a full day for Granada in order to appreciate the full grandeur and walking tour of the Moorish Alhambra Palace.
