Windermere, Cumbria - The Lake District, England
Number of guests
Sleeps up to 22
Property description
The Samling is one of those houses you wish was yours - and now it can be, in its entirety! For a weekend, a week, or for however long you want, you and your group of up to 22 can have the run of this beautiful Lake District hideaway, with its garden and sixty seven acre estate.
Built in the 1780s, the hotel is positioned a few hundred feet above Lake Windermere. Formerly known as dovenest, it’s the place Wordsworth came to pay his rent each month, walking to the house from nearby Dove Cottage in Grasmere. It opened as a hotel in the 1980s and has rapidly become one of the finest country house hotels in the country. Your group can take it over on an exclusive use basis, enjoying unimpeachable service, wonderful cooking, fine wines, boutique-hotel style bedrooms, hi-tech communication and the best of The Lake District’s outdoor activities.
Location
An unrivalled Lake District location, between Windermere and Ambleside, with stunning views over the water and onto the fells. The hotel is three hours by train from London. The nearest shops and pubs are in Windermere, some ten minutes away.
Airports: Manchester (90 miles); Newcastle (113 miles). Helipad on site.
Stations: Windermere; Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line (25 mins).
Accommodation
The Samling has its own private dining room, built to allow guests to enjoy dinner together as a group. In terms of the cuisine itself, the three rosette restaurant is led by Nigel Mendham, and offers food made only from the finest, freshest locally-sourced ingredients. The pioneering dishes have a lightness of touch unlike any other restaurant in the area. The hotel’s famous Cumbrian breakfast, enjoyed tucked up in bed, is a must! Its wine list is also reputable and is constantly evolving, with an excellent balance between new and old world (the hotel has its own house winery).
The hotel sleeps 22 altogether, in 11 double rooms. All are startlingly different, and all but two have stunning views over Lake Windermere. The Bothy Suite, for example, has an antique ceramic rain shower bath, which makes every soak an exciting experience! Six bedrooms are in the main house and five have been fashioned out of the original cottages. There is no best room - everyone has his own favourite.
CONFERENCES
The Samling is the perfect place to mix business with pleasure, without any of the usual distractions. While you’re miles from the nearest city, you’ll have all the essential facilities in-house. The Conference Centre in the old stables, for example, seats fourteen people in complete comfort. It is equipped and regularly updated with all the necessary audio-visual and communication tools. On a more intimate level, there are a number of syndicate rooms for smaller meetings. And a few yards away, The Dutch Barn Theatre can comfortably seat up to sixty delegates.
WEDDINGS
The Samling is licensed to hold civil marriage ceremonies. It has extremely high standards of service and quality, and a talent to make your great day worry-free. With eleven suites, you can take over the whole place, and accommodation for extra guests is available locally. You can have a marquee in the grounds if you wish, and although the hotel will suggest menus, they can cater for virtually anything you want.
Facilities
Besides the facilities already mentioned, there is a garden hot tub with amazing views over the lake – bliss after a day’s outdoor activity.
