Upcott

Seaton, Beer, Devon, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 14 (12 + 2 Z-beds and 2 cots)

Property description

Two minutes’ walk from the beach, Upcott is an Arts and Crafts house on Devon’s south Jurassic coast, offering a group of up to 12 a complete coastal experience. It is within easy reach of Beer, Axminster and Lyme Regis, and has been beautifully restored throughout with high-end appliances yet bearing the environment very much in mind. Upcott is five-star graded by Visit Britain.

Being green at Upcott, however, does not entail any concessions to comfort! The Greenpeace-certified, hotel-grade beds, for example, have been described as giving “the most comfortable night’s sleep I have ever had,” according to previous guests. “Like sleeping on a cloud!” The five bathrooms have the latest water-saving features, with indulgent touches like a chromotherapy Airbath and walk-in Raindance shower.

A wood-burning stove reduces carbon emissions, but gives off loads of heat. Contemporary designed Crucial Trading carpets and thermally lined curtains help conserve energy, with none of the off-gassing that manmade carpets can produce. All the appliances are high-end too, and A-rated for energy, the LCD TVs and Wi-Fi creating a home-from-home environment.

Location

Three hours’ drive from London and The Midlands, a couple of minutes’ walk from the beach and café, and a ten minute walk from Beer for pubs, restaurants, galleries, fishing trips etc. The village has a shop and there is a supermarket less than a mile away in Seaton. Online supermarket deliveries are also available (Tesco and Sainsbury’s). It is 7 miles to Axminster, 8 to Lyme Regis.

Airport: Exeter 18 miles

Station: Axminster (7 miles - 2.5 hrs from London)

Accommodation

The large, south-facing lounge has direct access onto a veranda. With its leather sofas, wood burning stove, TV and surround sound hi-fi it is a tranquil room for reading, watching and chatting. A separate TV room next door, complete with large screen TV, DVD and assorted games, is ideal for children. This room can also be used for small workshops if required.

The dining area has an extendable oak table that seats 12 and is just off the modern, catering style kitchen.

There are four double and two twin bedrooms (one of which is on the ground floor with a shower and loo for those with limited mobility). All the bedrooms have king-size Vi-Spring mattresses, and cotton towels, bed linen and toiletries are provided.

One of the most interesting features of Upcott is the turret area, which extends up from the lounge to the master bedroom. It has three windows for panoramic sea views and could make a very romantic spot for a small wedding. Meanwhile, it’s a great place to sit and chill!

Facilities

The kitchen is extremely well equipped, with double ovens, an American fridge freezer, dishwasher and granite worktops. A separate utility room has a washing machine, tumble drier and an additional fridge. A welcome hamper is provided on arrival.

Further eco-friendly features of the house include Worcester Bosch solar panels on the roof and eco paints and materials used throughout. Altogether, these features contribute to a ‘healthy house’ environment, low in domestic pollutants.

Families can have a lot of fun out in the gardens. There are large lawned areas suitable for games and entertaining, and the whole property is fully enclosed. The veranda has a barbecue and full seating.

Area

This part of Devon is a Unesco World Heritage site and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which is easy to appreciate. Guests can enjoy a day at the beach or rummage around various picturesque towns in Devon and nearby Dorset.

Beer itself offers boat and fishing trips, and its sailing club welcomes temporary members, as does the Axe Cliff Golf Club nearby.

There are lots of award-winning restaurants and bistros in the area, for when you don’t feel like cooking. River Cottage Axminster offers cookery courses as well as lunches and dinners. Then there’s the Mason’s Arms in Branscombe, Steamers bistro in Beer and celebrity chef Mark Hix’s new bistro in Lyme Regis. There are auction houses, antique shops, galleries and farmers’ markets galore. Families will find children’s activity centres and theme parks, and local swimming pools at Sidmouth (ozone), Axminster, Honiton and Seaton.

Prices

From £1,950 to £3,500 per week, depending on season.

3-night breaks midweek from £975.
