Slane, Co Meath, Ireland

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 36 (12 Main House, 24 Courtyard Mews + 4 Z beds)

Property description

Treat your family and friends to exclusive use of an 80-acre Irish estate. Tankardstown House is an idyllic Georgian manor house and cluster of seven stone cottages, all set in lush green countryside, where your group can party in splendid isolation, only half an hour from Dublin airport.

Book this private sanctuary for a fabulous wedding, an indulgent break with friends or an impressive corporate event. The main house lends itself to entertaining with elegant reception rooms, roaring log fires and sumptuous food prepared in the house kitchens, served in style in the dining room (you can also self-cater).

12 guests will be accommodated in the main house, whilst 24 more can sleep in the adjacent courtyard, “own door” suites. Children are incredibly welcome, as are pets, and guests can roam the estate for hours without the need to venture beyond the gates.

Location

Set in parkland, two miles from Slane village and Slane Castle (home to the famous U2 rock concerts). 50 minutes from Dublin town centre. Half a mile to the local pub, and 12 miles to Bettystown beach.

Airports: Dublin (30 mins); Belfast City (70 mins)

Station: Drogheda

Accommodation

If a grading of six stars existed, it would apply to Tankardstown. The whole place has been refurbished to an exceptional standard, though it’s still very warm and homely, as the seven open fires in the main house will testify.

The seven cottages are exquisitely decadent in comfort, yet designed to make you feel as though you own the place. You’ll find custom-made beds of regal proportions, power showers, plasma screen TVs, Egyptian towels and fresh crisp linen. The cosy sitting rooms have individually-designed fireplaces with coal-effect gas fires that ignite with the flick of a switch, while the kitchens come equipped with all the must-have appliances and, most importantly, well-stocked minibars.

Five cottages have two double ensuite bedrooms and separate kitchens. The remaining two cottages have one double ensuite bedroom and open plan kitchens.

Overall there are 30 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms, many of which are ensuite, some of which are shared. One double bedroom is situated at garden level, with a bathroom/shower adjacent, ideal for any guest with mobility problems.

The dining room seats 24 at a Georgian dining table, but if you are a full house then round tables of 10 will be arranged, seating up to 50. The kitchen is a large, painted affair with a four-oven Aga, double electric oven, microwave, gas hobs and a huge island for preparing food.

Area

Golfing is a huge interest around here, with five major golf clubs within easy driving distance. Horse racing is a passion too. The Curragh is an hour’s drive, and Leopardstown approximately an hour, depending on traffic. Other local activities include fishing, riding and fantastic walking.

The owners of Tankardstown have acquired a walking tour company, formerly known as Muddy Boots. Some of the qualified guides from this group can now escort groups of guests at Tankardstown to various areas of Meath, Louth and Bangor to enjoy the stunning scenery and challenging hikes that these counties have to offer. Boots and wet weather clothing in most sizes are provided.

Slane Castle, the home of The Earl & Countess of Mount Charles, is renowned worldwide for the annual U2 rock concerts held in the amphitheatre in front of the castle.

Newgrange, one of Europe’s foremost Neolithic sites, is three miles away.

Prices

Pricing is flexible and tends to vary from group depending on requirements. It works out as approximately £200 per person per night, self-catering, though this can rise depending on dates.
