Property description
Can Jan is a sophisticated, very tastefully restored ancient farmhouse, an idyllic house party venue a few miles inland from the Costa Brava. With stunning views and 500 acres of private forested land, which you can roam freely (including a river and waterfall), the house is stylish and very definitely high-end. Make the most of the ultimate serenity, or blast the place with music and party as loudly as you want!
This is a fabulous location for exploring the best of Catalonia, only an hour and a half from Barcelona and the French border, and eight minutes from the lively medieval village of Besalu. It is ideal for family holidays (anything from 12 to 30 people), as well as corporate weekends, weddings, product launches and filming.
The owners have thought of everything. There’s a large swimming pool with pool house and eating area, lots of terraces and verandahs, every hi-tech gadget, a sauna and steam room and masses of cooking and food storage equipment. Classic contemporary art hangs on the walls, including work by Marc Quinn, Tracey Emin and Gary Hume.
The northern Costa Brava is “real Spain”, a far cry from the package holiday beaches further south. This is a more discerning corner, with a gorgeous, crenellated coast of picturesque fishing villages (such as Salvador Dali’s Cadaques) and pretty beaches, backed by pines and lush countryside. The coast road twists and turns above dramatic cliff drops, dotted with tasteful villas and upmarket hotels looking down on stunning sea views. From Can Jan, guests have easy access to all the major sights, including the Dali Museum at Figueras and the shops, restaurants and Jewish Quarter of Gerona. The house is 45 minutes from the coast.
Location
Positioned at the end of a mile long drive, within hundreds of acres of stunning, forested land. Besalu is lively year round, with a supermarket, shops, cafes, banks and restaurants. Bigger supermarkets are available in Olot or Banyoles (ten minutes’ drive).

Accommodation
Can Jan was conceived with the owners’ dream holidays in mind. It is decorated with fine country antiques and fully equipped with modern comforts. Guests can enjoy large, airy living areas, stylish bedrooms, two kitchens (one for the professional chef if required, one solely for the use of guests) and meals on beautiful terraces and verandas with superb views.
The house is available for large groups of between 12 and 26 people. There are 12 double/twin bedrooms, and an extra double futon for two children. There’s also an annexed cottage, next to the villa but completely self-contained with its own kitchen, bathroom and two double bedrooms that can sleep a further 4 adults. All the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, except the children's room where the bathroom is next door. All the bathrooms have showers apart from two that have baths.
The accommodation is spread over three floors. At ground level is a wide entrance hall, a spacious dining room, the guests’ kitchen and a large bedroom with sitting area (accessible by wheelchair). All these rooms have direct access to the garden. There is also a staff kitchen on this floor, a cloakroom, and the sauna and steam room.
The big, main sitting room with fireplace is on the first floor. It has a large balcony attached, with views down to the pool. There is a cosy TV room next door, and four bedrooms, all with balconies.
The top floor is accessed by two staircases, which lead to two separate wings. The eastern wing has two bedrooms; the western wing includes a large open sitting room with a fireplace, and five bedrooms, one of which is the children’s room with its own cute mezzanine (with futon).
Fifty yards from the house, across landscaped lawns, is the huge pool and pool house with its own eating, sitting and cooking area that's perfect for swimming and sunbathing.
Facilities
A big group of up to 28 needs a lot in the way of domestic appliances, and is well catered for at Can Jan. You’ll find two fridges (one American size), one freezer, two dishwashers, a microwave, an oven and a barbecue. Other facilities include a telephone, internet access, a DVD player, satellite TV, full central heating and fans.
A chef and maid service is available if required.
Conference and wedding facilities can all be arranged.
Area
The key sights to visit include Figueras and its surreal Dali museum (20 mins), Gerona with its historic Jewish quarter, fine restaurants and great shops (25 mins), the Gaudi architecture, galleries, museums, cathedral and shops in Barcelona (1hr 15 mins) and Garrotxa volcanic area (25 mins). The nearest ski resort in the Pyrenees is Vallter 2000, an hour’s drive away.
El Bulli restaurant, rated the world’s best, is an hour from the house (book well in advance).
Horse riding, cycling (and bike hire), hiking, sailing, hot air balloon rides and 4x4 excursions can all be arranged locally. Please let the owners know in advance if you are planning any of these activities.
