Hurdlow Grange

Hurdlow, Buxton, Derbyshire, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 43 (very flexible, all group sizes welcome)

Property description

Hurdlow Grange is a collection of five contemporary farmhouses and barns that can sleep any combination of people from 14 in the Grange itself, right up to 43 if you take over all five houses.

Hurdlow is privately owned by a group of friends who have spent years holidaying together around the UK. Far from being a run-of-the-mill barn conversion, this venue meets the requirements of both walkers and people just wanting a few days to wind down and enjoy a fantastically comfortable holiday in the Peak District.

Designed with distinct urban flair, the houses are individual but the common theme throughout is for big, comfy leather sofas, solid oak flooring, hand-made curtains and simple but luxurious linens. Colours tend towards the neutral with lots of whites/creams and coffees. The ethos is that in their busy, cluttered lives it is a delight for guests to be able to relax in simple, minimalist but well-equipped surroundings.

The location is fabulous, with the best of the Peak District on the doorstep, and it will appeal to anyone who thrives on getting out and about in the fresh air (the start of the Tissington Trail is 400 metres away). At the end of every day you’ll return to piping hot baths, soft snugly duvets, a games room for the kids and big, white, painted wood kitchens with huge granite cooking surfaces. You can take over the whole place on a self-catering basis, but if you wish to have meals provided, outside caterers, bar staff, waiters, chefs etccan come and cook/serve on site at any time.

The unusual thing about Hurdlow is that two groups can holiday here at the same time, and have done many times very successfully in the past, whilst remaining completely unaware of each other. The houses can be mixed and matched in various combinations, always ensuring that each group not only has its own privacy but a big living/dining space in which to eat together, and lots of space to run around in. If you are a group of, say, 20, you can take over The Grange and Bats’ Belfry. 22 guests could combine Cruck’d Barn, Amberleigh House and Applegarth.

Location

In the middle of nowhere, in the heart of the Peak District, three miles from the village of Longnor and half a mile from the nearest pub (The Royal Oak, runner-up in the Derbshire Food Pub of the Year Awards 2008). Tesco Direct can deliver.

Airports: Manchester; East Midlands (both one hour)
Station: Macclesfield (half hour). London 2 hrs with Virgin Train.

Accommodation

“We all loved the cottages and had a fantastic time,” one guest raves about Hurdlow in its visitor book. “They have been beautifully put together and no-one wanted to leave! Thought they were really well equipped and were particularly lovely for a group get-together. We were here for a birthday and New Year, and it was great that a large group could spend time together so comfortably.”

The five houses are grouped around a shared, central courtyard:

* The Grange (sleeps 14)
* Amberleigh House (8)
* Cruck'd Barn (8)
* Applegarth (6)
* Bats Belfry (6)

Between them they have 21 bedrooms (a combination of doubles and twin beds which can be zipped and linked), and 18 bathrooms. Each house has its own patio or garden area. The kitchens have everything you’ll need in the way of fridges, freezers, ovens, microwaves, washing machines, dishwashers etc.

The Grange is the grande dame, a 200-year-old farmhouse with character to match. It has large rooms, high ceilings, flagged and oak floors and a stone cellar, with a welcoming open fire in the dining room and traditional wooden tables. Children love the second floor eaves bedrooms with their sloping ceilings.

Facilities

You will find plenty to entertain a large group here, including a games room (table tennis, table football, darts, board games, poker table), barbecues for outdoor summer living, and five acres of grounds. All the houses have satellite TVs, CD and DVD players (some films supplied).

Linen and towels are supplied. An initial supply of logs, in those houses with open fires, is complimentary, thereafter available at nominal charge. A standard fuel charge (between £15 and £40) is made for every booking.

Broadband is available on site in the office.

As far as any disabled guests are concerned, two properties have a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen on the ground floor.

If you are a full house (up to 43) you can all eat together in Cruck’d Barn. If you prefer to split into smaller groups to eat, 14 can dine together in the Grange, 20 or more in Bats Belfry.

Marquees can be set up for weddings in the paddock. There are also areas for caterers’ units, temporary loos etc. Small conference groups are very welcome, and all equipment can be hired in.

One of the owners, Paul White, manages the properties full time and is always available to answer any questions and help ensure you have everything you need.

Please note that no smoking is allowed inside.

Area

Beyond the Grange lies everything that the Peak District has to offer, including wonderful walks, lots of outdoor pursuits (mountain biking, walking/trekking, climbing, sailing and all other watersports with lessons available at nearby Carrsington), quad biking, pot holing, abseiling etc. Buxton and Bakewell both have indoor pools.

The market towns of Bakewell, Ashbourne and the historic spa town of Buxton are ten minutes away. It is half an hour’s drive to Alton Towers and 15 minutes to Chatsworth House.

The nearest groceries are available from Longnor (five mins), Bakewell (10 mins) and Buxton. Buxton has a Morrison's and Waitrose; Bakewell has a Co-Op. The Royal Oak (half a mile) serves excellent meals. Takeaways available from Longnor, Bakewell and Buxton.
