Property description
“The best house in France to share with family and friends” was how The Guardian described Chateau de la Couronne. This house is a rarity, a stunning, fashionable retreat near Angouleme, perfect for holidays with family and friends and special events. With backgrounds in fashion and television, the owners have produced a stylish home, where original high ceilings, exposed stone walls and huge fireplaces combine with an eclectic blend of ornate antiques, 60s and 70s design classics, commissioned pieces and original art. Their obsession with high standards and detail is also evident in the attentive, very discreet service, making you quickly feel part of the growing Chateau de la Couronne family!
Sitting in its own five acre park, the chateau has space in abundance – nine bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms designed with flair and individuality, vast reception rooms, a 14 metre heated outdoor pool, and even a private cinema. It has been used for film and television locations, and is rapidly becoming a beloved oasis for those in the know, from film directors to families and friends, all seeking countryside calm combined with urban facilities and style.
Location
Peaceful and relaxing without being isolated, the house is a five minute stroll from Marthon, a typical French village, close to the lively city of Angouleme. It has all the necessary facilities (see below) including a restaurant. The nearest large supermarket is at Montbron (9 kms).
Airports: Angouleme (25 kms); Limoges (95 kms); Poitiers (130 kms); Bergerac (125 kms); Bordeaux (140 kms).
Station: Angouleme (TGV connection Paris, 2hrs 10 mins)
Accommodation
The chateau is self-catering, but can be catered as and when you wish. The piece de resistance is probably the spectacular refectoire dining hall with original exposed stone walls reaching up 25 feet to the accoustic ceiling. Your big group can dine together at the main table, which can seat up to 26. With additional tables, up to 80 can be seated for weddings and special events.
The large, professional kitchen is a great space for you all to gather in, and is fully equipped for domestic and professional needs.
For your complete relaxation, choose between any one of the main reception rooms – three beautiful salons each with comfy sofas, French doors leading to the rear terrace to keep cool in the summer, and open fires for cosy winter nights. One has a baby grand piano, another a bar which can be fully stocked for the duration of your stay. There is also a pool room wiith full-size American pool table; and a private cinema with a 9ft screen, surround sound system, satellite television and extensive DVD library to view in the cinema or, if you would prefer, on the TVs available in each of the bedrooms.
There are nine bedrooms in total including five bedroom suites, each with a stunning ensuite bathroom, two further double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and a family suite with two bedrooms and bathroom. Each bedroom is a treat in itself, with an extra large double bed, Egyptian cotton bed linen, TV and DVD player and some with mini bars.
There are also six single beds if needed, which can be arranged in the bedrooms to suit requirements.
The bathrooms are huge - some with turrets, some with two baths, some with walk-in showers and Starck-designed glass sinks, but all ridiculously opulent places to relax. They have white fluffy towels, bathrobes and bathing products.
The five acre private park is surrounded by a stone wall encompassing mature trees and sweeping lawns. The central couryard terrace is perfect for al fresco dining and the rear terrace, extending the length of the chateau, is arranged with bistro tables.
The pool is surrounded by a stone terrace with reclining sun loungers, marble tables and sun umbrellas. Pool towels are provided. Beyond this, the whole park offers plenty of places for relaxation with wide open spaces for children’s activities, ball games and barbecues.
Facilities
The chateau’s private website (see below) has full details of the extensive facilities – basically you will want for nothing! In addition to those already mentioned you will find a games room, a home office giving free and unlimited ADSL internet access, a laundry room with washing machine, dryer etc, and during the winter months, included in the hire rate, full central heating throughout the chateau and logs for the open fires.
The rental price includes the services of a caretaker for two hours each morning, and a housekeeper for the same amount of time to help clean the kitchen and tidy the recreational areas. The owners, Nicky and Mark, can always be contacted for help if necessary, and various additional services can be provided at any time during your stay, including catered meal/drink options (breakfast, lunch or dinner), beauty treatments (massage, manicure and pedicure), musical entertainment, general cleaning and other services by request.
Chateau de la Couronne is a spectacular venue and such a fairytale castle that it is obviously very popular for wedding receptions. You can book it for a small and intimate reception or a larger gathering of up to 80. Larger numbers can be catered for in marquees. The owners will work closely with you to deliver a unique and memorable day, and will make all the arrangements as you wish.
Chateau de la Couronne is a spectacular conference venue, with various rooms you can use for either small business meetings, or larger conferences to seat 100 delegates cinema style.
Area
The chateau is situated right on the border of the Charente and Dordogne regions, with many local activities, including three international golf courses, horse riding, canoeing, go-karting, tennis, cycling and wine-tasting. There are various cultural sites to visit, and lots of reasonably-priced, regional restaurants nearby.
Marthon itself is a disarmingly friendly and welcoming place, with a small river running through its centre. It has all the requisite French holiday experiences, including a boulangerie, tabac, boucherie, pharmacie, general grocery store, a vegetable market each Thursday morning, an authentic bar, pizzeria, even a small cinema that screens international films, and a very quaint little nightclub frequented by all ages from the village! The park has a fabulous tennis court and is a wonderful spot for fishing.
Festivities held through the year in the local towns and villages vary, from bric a bracs every Sunday in the summer months to full blown music festivals and international cycling and car tours. The climate is warm, the people are friendly, and Chateau de la Couronne the perfect retreat!
