Property description
A shell’s throw from the beach and crystal clear waters of a lagoon, Mayoka Lodge is a sumptuous, self-catering or catered house which up to 12 guests can hire and holiday in! Mayoka is undoubtedly the most fabulous house on the island of Roatan, part of the Bay islands off the north coast of Honduras. It’s a six-bedroomed affair, the bedrooms actually being hexagonal “pods”, detached from the main house, where you can chill out to the sounds of the nearby surf and enjoy spectacular views over the sea.
The Lodge is intimate and elegant enough to feel as though it’s your own home for a week or so, and has all the “I could stay here forever” touches and facilities of a luxury resort. You will have your own private infinity pool, a tennis court, 300 feet of quiet white sandy beach, and every imaginable hi-tech gizmo, piece of sports equipment and beach toy your big group could possibly need. Airport pick-up is included or a 24/7 chauffeur-driven vehicle can be made available.
Location
On arrival in Roatan you will be met at the airport and escorted to the lodge, a 10 minute drive away. It is set at the end of a private gated driveway, in five acres of beautifully landscaped tropical gardens. This is the quiet village of Sandy Bay, which is only five minutes’ drive from the island’s busy West End where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.
Airport: Roatan International (12 minutes’ drive)
Accommodation
The English owners, Paul and Mandy Croucher, moved to Roatan in 1999, where they fell in love with the island and Sandy Bay. They created Mayoka Lodge with a view to entertaining and having fun in utmost luxury with a large group of friends or extended family. Always nearby to answer any questions and yet far enough away to ensure total privacy, Paul and Mandy take guest relations, comfort and relaxation as a full time commitment to their guests!
The windows are always open to the sun and sea, and the décor is a wonderful combination of teak and split rattan furniture, with various artifacts from Indonesia and Africa. You can all eat in style around an English oak dining table, and there is a breakfast bar overlooking the pool where you can wake up to freshly-squeezed orange juice and freshly-ground Honduran coffee.
A mezzanine office area has high-speed internet access, a printer and a phone. Hardwood decking surrounds the pool and bedrooms, and various hammocks call out for serious lounging!
Five of the double bedrooms are pods, beautifully decorated, totally private and connected by a beautiful Mexican “Saltillo” tiled walk, enabling you to walk directly onto the pool terrace for morning, midday or moonlight dips. The sixth suite is the master bedroom which lies by itself at the top of the Lodge.
All the suites have stunning views, spacious en-suite bathrooms decorated in natural stone tile and hardwood throughout, LCD TV/DVD, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, water coolers, Ralph Lauren linens and towels, bathrobes and hairdryers. There is the flexibility and space to have several suites configured with twin beds or cots if required. The master Royal Suite, occupying the entire second floor of the Lodge, has a grand teak four poster bed, a polished hardwood floor, walk-in shower, freestanding slipper bath (for two) and 180 degree views. The Coconut Pod is the honeymoon suite, the largest of the pods with a king size bed and a vast walk-in shower big enough for a whole family!
The Lodge has eight bathrooms altogether.
Facilities
These include five acres of tropical manicured gardens, a media room with 48” satellite LCD screen/DVD/Playstation/Wii, an extensive DVD & book library, a bar area with satellite TV, a pool table, table football, chess, backgammon & a selection of board games.
The shallow edge of the pool is an ideal playing space for young children. If you prefer to swim in the sea, a private dock and an offshore sunning platform means you can spend hours relaxing or enjoying watersports on the nearby aquamarine lagoon just steps from the Lodge. This lagoon is a huge area and is always very calm as the reef protects it from the waves. It’s a 15 minute swim to the reef from shore.
A masseuse is available on request.
Linen, bath/beach towels, bathrobes, hairdryers and toiletries are supplied.
Sports equipment includes kayaks, snorkelling equipment, sea scooters, tennis rackets, remote control cars, darts and basketball.
Area
Roatan, the largest of the Bay Islands, is located in the Western Caribbean Sea and lies 35 miles off the north coast of Honduras along the Bonacca Ridge. This submerged mountain ridge is also the world's second largest barrier reef, home to a diversity of aquatic life and world class scuba diving.
The island is approximately 35 miles long and varies in width from one to six miles. It has lush tropical jungle-covered hills, pristine white sandy beaches, clear turquoise waters, unique cultures and authentic Caribbean charm.
The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to January. Temperatures range from 72-88F. The water temperatures fluctuate from a cool 79 to a comfortable 86F.
These islands are famous for their diving/snorkelling, secluded beaches, deep-sea and flat fishing, windsurfing, wonderful shopping for native handcrafts, rain forest hikes, beach/jungle horse back riding tours, sailing, submarine rides, dolphin encounters, canopy tours (aerial pulley rides through the jungle), and iguana & butterfly farms.
If golf is more your thing, you can enjoy a few rounds at the signature Pete Dye Black Pearl Golf Course, already voted one of the top five in the Caribbean.
