Property description
When is a schoolhouse not a schoolhouse? When it has been transformed into an immaculate, welcoming and extremely elegant home. Sayres House is a period, detached Cotswold stone house which would once have housed the local pupils, but after a serious makeover it is now a very desirable venue for a house party of up to 12 friends and family. It even has its own indoor swimming pool. The bedrooms make full use of the original eaves, with their high, beamed ceilings, distinctive colour themes and snugly beds, and the living areas are comfortable and relaxing. The setting is perfect too, a quiet hamlet with extensive views over the gentle countryside.
The gardens will please any keen gardener, and the kitchen is extensively equipped for the serious cook. This is an ideal venue in which to either entertain or simply work away from home. It is let on a self-catering basis, but catering can be provided by prior arrangement.
Location
The house stands in the little village of Cold Ashton, easily accessed from Junction 18 of the M4 which is 3 miles away, and close to Bath. There are great walks on the Cotswold way from the front door of the property down and around St Catherine's Valley.
Airport: Bristol
Station: Bath
Accommodation
You’ll find all the hi-tech equipment holidaymakers have come to expect, including TV with Sky, DVD and video players, free wireless broadband within the house and a room to room audio system. There are five double bedrooms (each with a TV), an extra bed in a recess in the master bedroom, four bathrooms, and a choice of relaxing living rooms, including a music room with piano.
The kitchen is well equipped with a trusty Aga as the central feature. A traditional breakfast table enables guests to meet up over the first meal of the day and plan the day’s events.
Outside, there’s an acre of walled gardens and lawns to play in. There’s an elegant gazebo and a hidden parterre garden surrounded by high yew hedging. This is a magical space and very much a garden within a garden. A children’s swing, slide and climbing apparatus is available behind one of the beech hedges. There’s also a barbecue, and outside dining table and chairs.
Facilities
The biggest draw at Sayres House is the heated pool, where you can swim day and night (under floodlights). The water temperature is deliciously warm year round and the whole set-up, with changing room, is enclosed in a conservatory-type room. It’s floodlit, so pre-dinner evening swims are a must! There is a terrace for sunbathing.
The whole house is heated by oil central heating, with complementary open fires.
Besides the Aga, the kitchen has hob and fan oven, professional cooking appliances, a dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.
Conference facilities include the table seating 12, wireless broadband, ample parking and proximity to the M4 and Bath.
Pets by prior arrangement.
Sorry, but no smoking is allowed in the house.
Area
The Cotswold Way long distance footpath is on your doorstep, offering some wonderful walks down and around St Catherine’s Valley. You could also spend hours pottering around the gorgeous Cotswold villages. The delightful National Trust house and gardens of Dyrham Park are only a few miles away. So, too, is the venue for the Badminton Horse Trials. The fabulous Georgian town of Bath, its shopping renowned for being second only to London’s, is six miles south.
Other must-do attractions include 14th century Clevedon Court, the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography at Lacock Abbey; the charming English country Courts Garden; Chavenage House (reputedly haunted); Berkeley Castle which played a prominent part in the English Civil War; the National Arboretum at Westonbirt; and a traditional cream tea at historic Owlpen Manor with its magnificent Tudor Great Hall.
