Property description
Great Calva is a magnificent new cottage built to a traditional Cumbrian style near Caldbeck, set in the stunning scenery of the Lake District Northern Fells. The cottage is part of Monkhouse Hill Cottages which have been created from a converted hill farm. Winners of the award for 'Self-Catering Holiday of the Year' in the Cumbria Tourist Board's 2003 Excellence Awards, the cottages have been designed very much with larger family get-togethers and celebrations in mind.
Location
Great Calva enjoys some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, and most rooms command panoramic views across Eden Valley. The Northern Fells of the Lake District, which rise up from Bassenthwaite, Ullswater and Derwentwater lakes, include such famous mountain peaks as Skiddaw and Blencathra. The cottage is situated at Monkhouse Hill, and as such can be booked in conjunction with adjacent cottages to accommodate larger groups of up to 46 people - indeed larger groups often find that a combination of cottages best suits their needs. All the cottages are on the same site and are within half a minute's walk of each other. Great Calva has a small patio area, with garden table, chairs and barbecue equipment, but guests can also use the two acres of grass paddock (picnics, dog exercising etc) and the children's adventure playground.
Accommodation
The cottage has a dining room with locally crafted rustic furniture including a fine baronial dining table for 14 and a pine kitchen fully equipped to cater for large groups, with two ovens, two hobs, microwave etc. If you were to book one or more of the Monkhouse Hill cottages in conjunction with Great Calva there would not be room for everyone to sit down to eat together in Great Calva but there is certainly room for big informal buffets.
There are six bedrooms altogether, plus one sofa bed in the second lounge. Downstairs are two separate bedroom suites, each with a private hallway leading to a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a bathroom. Upstairs is an expansive living area with wonderful views, exposed natural stonework and a log burning stove in an inglenook fireplace. Also upstairs is a third bedroom suite with a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a luxury bathroom complete with sauna, spa bath, steam tub and shower, and a separate WC and basin. Finally, there is a cosy extra sitting room with second TV/video, dressing room and sofa bed, which converts into a seventh bedroom.
Facilities
Great Calva is furnished and equipped to the ultimate 5-star standard. If guests prefer not to cook, an evening meal service is available from event caterer Frankie Grieve (menus can be ordered on www.monkhousehill.co.uk/order.htm), and draught local beer can be ordered. Bicycle hire and indoor and outdoor games can all be arranged, and all guests are automatically given full membership of the North Lakes Spa in Penrith (15 minutes by car) which has a swimming pool, sauna, squash and gym. A small group of conference delegates could meet very happily at Great Calva. Children and pets are very welcome (the house has two cots). There is a pay telephone on site, with 'pay as you go' mobile phones available to borrow (the only charge is for cost of calls).
Area
The whole of the Lake District lies on Great Calva's doorstep with more than one holiday's worth of things to do and see. The fabulous scenery is ideal for walking, climbing, boating, cycling and car touring. The three main centres nearby are Keswick, Penrith and Carlisle. For daytrips out into the rural landscape there's Hadrian's Wall, several stately homes (Hutton in the Forest, for example), and Rheged, Europe's largest earth-covered building.
