Property description

Make yourself entirely at home in this fabulous, listed, stone Jacobean Hall, previously the home of the High Sheriff of Staffordshire. You and your big group can self-cater in style, snuggle down in front of open fires, escape from the children in the Music Room, cook delicious meals in the beautifully equipped kitchens and dream on in the gorgeous gardens.

There are all manner of catered options available if you feel like a lazy break (see below), as well as various treats you can book, from beauty therapies, babysitting and maid service to hang gliding, adventure days out and dry slope skiing.

Location

On a hillside, way off the road, enjoying fabulous views.

Nearest airport: Manchester

Nearest stations: Buxton, Macclesfield or Stoke-on-Trent.

Accommodation

Toft Hall can accommodate 21 people and there’s more than enough room for a large group to spread out. The Sitting Room has the sort of squashy sofas that you don’t want to get up from, wonderful views to the west and a door direct to the garden. In the summer the thick stone walls ensure that it is always cool, and in the winter the wood burning stove and thick curtains mean that you feel cosy and warm. The Music Room, with its oak floor, gold silk curtains, comfortable seating and quality hi-fi system, is the room for grown-ups to escape to. Next door is The Snug with an Xbox game console and games.

The Smallbone kitchen, a handmade wood and stone affair, has everything a large group of cooks could need, including a built-in microwave combination oven, two additional ovens, a 4-ring hob, a washer/dryer, a dishwasher and a large fridge/freezer. The equipment is high quality, with just about everything you can think of, from apple corers to hot water bottles. If you need anything else, just ask. There is a second, smaller, fully-equipped kitchen which gives you added flexibility.

Walk through to the dining room, richly decorated in a deep red with delicate lighting, an exposed stone wall, one large dining table and quality china. All it needs is fresh flowers from the garden, good food and wine, and you have the perfect night in with friends.

All the bedrooms have sumptuous furniture, comfortable beds and rich fabrics. On the first floor there are two double bedrooms, two twins, one single and a family room for up to four. On the second floor there are two doubles and one twin room through to another family room (for up to four). Please note that the doorways to these latter rooms are very low (although the bedrooms themselves are high) and are not suitable for those with mobility problems. There are five bathrooms in total.

Facilities

Toft Hall specialises in what it calls “Hot Houseparties”. If you are planning a celebration meal while you are here, you can pre-book delicious gourmet dishes which will be waiting for you in the freezer – you just pop them in the oven on the day, and dinner is served! The owners can also provide breakfast packs, buffets and picnic lunches, all made with fresh local produce.

Alternatively, an experienced Chef can be hired, together with waiting staff to cook your own choice of menu and clear away afterwards – your very own private restaurant experience.

If you wish the owners to book beauty treatments, golf, hang-gliding or any other activity, let them know and they will do their best to arrange it all for you. Likewise, if you fancy a night out without the children, they can usually arrange babysitting, always with a responsible adult.

The beautiful gardens are enclosed on two sides by an original high stone wall, with a rose arbour, herb garden, fenced wildlife pond (parents of young children need to supervise them here) and breathtaking views for miles. There is a barbeque, a children’s playhouse and lots of garden furniture.

Children and pets are very welcome.

Area

The Peak District lies on the doorstep, a wonderfully scenic area with all manner of opportunities for adventurous activities and sports. There are many miles of former railway lines too, which are flat, safe and mostly car-free, ideal for family cycling. They include the Manifold Track, Tissington Trail, Longdendale Trail, Sett Valley Trail and the High Peak Trail. There are also more challenging rides on the hills and dales. Bring your own bikes or hire them locally.

You can arrange to have a go at bird watching, pottery, train driving, clay pigeon shooting, go-karting, cookery, ten pin bowling and snowboarding.

The list of interesting places to visit in the Peak District is too long to mention, but includes villages with dressed water wells (famous in this area), Chatsworth Estate (“the greatest private palace in England”), Quarry Bank cotton mill, and Lyme Park where BBC’s Pride and Prejudice was filmed.
