Property description
Myres Castle is a beautiful, privately-owned, 16th century castle. It is a sumptuous private home which can only be hired on an exclusive use basis, perfect for a getaway with a group of friends, a special celebration such as a wedding, birthday or anniversary, or even for a small conference or executive retreat. The owners have recently renovated the castle so that guests will be treated to a luxurious, fully-catered visit, that's also warm, hospitable and full of character.
Location
The castle stands in 45 acres of gorgeous gardens, rich in history and worthy of the self-guided walk the owners have prepared. Here in the parish of Auchtermuchty, guests are just half an hour from the major towns of St Andrews, Perth and Dundee, and only 45 minutes from Edinburgh.
Accommodation
Each of the nine double bedrooms has its own personality, combining luxury with historic atmosphere. The Queen's Room, for example, is where Mary Queen of Scots reputedly slept on visits to the castle. It also features an exquisite quilt embroidered by the ladies of Auchtermuchty as a wedding gift to the castle's 19th century proprietor. Tom's Room is for romantics, with a huge four-poster bed, while the Tower Room's showpiece is its magnificent Victorian clawfoot bath that looks onto the bedroom and an 'Alice in Wonderland' door that winds up to the top of the tower offering panoramic views of the Howe of Fife. All the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and CD players and five of them can be twinned.
Big group meals can be taken either in the formal dining room amidst gleaming silver and sparkling crystal or in the informal Victorian kitchen. The resident and award-winning chef, Christopher Trotter, cooks wonderful meals using quality local ingredients. All meals and soft drinks are included in the price. Afterwards guests can sink into sumptuous sofas around the open fire.
Facilities
Guests will want for nothing whether they're here to work or to relax. In addition to the library, study (with modem point and fax machine), billiard room and family/TV room, there is a fully-equipped conference room for 14, furbished on commission from David Linley. Also available in the castle is a selection of DVDs, videos, CDs and Nintendo, with Sky TV in the TV room and library. Children are most welcome, but sorry, no pets.
For the active, Myres has a tennis court, table tennis table and four mountain bikes. Badminton, croquet and volleyball can also be played in the grounds. Various beauty spa treatments and hairdressing can be arranged. There is a helicopter landing area in the grounds from which transfers can be arranged to and from local airports.
Myres Castle offers special wedding packages and tariffs and can assist with all arrangements, from the wedding cake to the marquee.Various entertainments can be booked for large gatherings: Ceilidh, a Piper to pipe you into dinner, Ghostly Fireside Tales, Whisky Tasting and Talk, Murder Mystery Evening and a Fireworks display. A full Highland Dress Kit can be hired for gentlemen, Tartan Sash and Celtic Brooch for ladies.
Area
There is a huge range of activities around the Castle, from the muddy outdoor hunting, shooting and fishing variety in the Highlands to the shopping and culture of two great cities (Edinburgh and Glasgow) in the Lowlands. You can follow well-marked forest trails, play golf on historic links or relax in the library with a good book and glass of fine old single malt. The nearest airports are Dundee (20 minutes) and Edinburgh (45 minutes).
