Property description
Pieve a Castello is a historically unique monument that has been restored with great attention to detail by local craftsmen, using traditional materials. All the bedrooms are different. As is usual with a medieval building they are set around a central courtyard, and have extensive, enviable views. There are plenty of common areas, including the loggia above the quad, library, three dining rooms, herb garden and rear terrace overlooking the organic kitchen garden that supplies Pieve with seasonal vegetables. ATG Oxford (see below) can organise week-long itineraries with a wide spectrum of interests from learning Italian and painting to music and cooking.
Location
Pieve a Castello is situated in the hills near medieval Monteriggioni, in the province of Siena. The picturesque countryside around Pieve is ideal for walking, or visiting some of Tuscany's most beautiful and interesting hill towns. Two Mercedes Sprinter Vans are available for excursions.
Accommodation
The buildings are built around a central courtyard. Of particular interest is the octagonal baptistery which dates from the 8th century, now used as a dining room, and the chapel, which has hosted musical concerts for up to 100 people. All rooms have underfloor heating, and there is a fireplace in the reading room so that the convent is extremely comfortable year round. There are 8 large double bedrooms and two single rooms all with private facilities. Each has been decorated in a simple but elegant style in keeping with the original function of the building.
Facilities
Pieve is fully staffed by 10 people, including an English-speaking manager and several highly trained tour guides who lead walking and special interest itineraries. Raymond Blanc and the Schubert Ensemble have also led trips at Pieve. All meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner) are prepared by the staff, and there is an extensive wine cellar. Transfers and excursions are included in any 8-day stay.
Area
The house stands in the heart of Tuscany, a short drive from the region's most popular tourist haunts: Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Volterra and Siena. It's also convenient for visits to Pisa and Florence as well as a trip into Chianti and Southern Tuscany (for such delightful historic towns as Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino).
Prices
One week based on 16 people, 'Walking Through History' itinerary: £1595 per person fully inclusive (except flights).
