Argoed Hall

Froncysyllte, Llangollen, Wrexham, Wales

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 36

Property description

Argoed Hall is a Grade II listed, Victorian mansion house, overlooking the river Dee and the beautiful Vale of Llangollen. Each of the four wings that make up the Hall have been painstaking refurbished and converted into modern townhouses by the present owners. Each Wing can accommodate between 7 and 11. You can hire one or more of the Wings – together they create a superb and unusually large venue for groups of up to 36.

Many original features have been retained, including feature fireplaces, stairways, mosaic-tiled or parquet flooring, ornate plasterwork, oak wood panelling and carved stonework. Guests can also enjoy full 21st century comforts, including sophisticated kitchens and gorgeous bathrooms. Each room has views over the grounds or down the river valley.

The Hall is located just outside Llangollen, in the village of Froncysyllte. Whilst this is a quiet, secluded position, it is only a few minutes' walk from the World Heritage Site of Llangollen with its historic canal network, and Brunel's famous aqueduct some 50 metres above the River Dee.

Your introduction to Argoed will be via electronically-operated gates that open onto a sweeping drive leading up to the house. The grounds are spread over some three acres that have also been designated of historic importance by CADW. They incorporate areas of lawns, sunken gardens, massive fir and beech trees and woodland Victorian features that remain include exotic trees, various fauna and a wonderful summer house with intricate tiled flooring and a terracotta roof.

Location

Situated on a country lane, opposite the Llangollen aqueduct. The local pub is five minutes' walk, just up the hill. There are various village shops and a post office in Froncysyllte (10 minutes' drive), with bigger facilities including supermarkets in Llangollen. It is a 40-minute drive to the beach.

Airports: Liverpool (47 miles); Manchester (55 miles)

Station: Wrexham (11 miles)

Accommodation

All four houses are beautifully decorated with large, sunny, elegant rooms. Kitchens are fitted either with oak or cream-painted wooden units and have granite worktops and stone or original terracotta floors, Belfast sinks and oak dining tables and chairs. The lounges are large, light and sunny, with wooden floors, big Italian leather sofas (red, brown …), large oak fireplaces, mood lighting and sometimes a chandelier.

Each house has a well-equipped utility room. Bathrooms have roll top baths and hand-held showers. And all the bedrooms have polished granite floors, sumptuous mattresses, oak beds and furniture and crisp white cotton bedding. Towels, robes and slippers are provided.

Please note that although each house has its own dining table, the owners are very happy to put in a large table to enable bigger groups of up to 36 to dine together, as required.

West Wing sleeps 8 and is arranged over four floors. It has four bedrooms (four singles, two doubles), three of which are ensuite.

East Wing sleeps 10, is also arranged over four floors and has five double bedrooms (two of which are ensuite).

South Wing sleeps 7 and is arranged over two floors. Its four bedrooms consist of one master king size, one double and three singles.

North Wing sleeps 11 over three floors. It has six bedrooms – one king size, one four poster, two doubles and three singles. Its grand period lounge, formerly a Victorian ballroom, has intricate ceiling plaster work and chandeliers.

The large grounds are ideal for wedding receptions, and marquees can be erected in the grounds.

The grounds of Argoed Hall, spread over some three acres, are designated historical. They consist of lawns, sunken gardens, massive fir and beech trees and woodland. They are ideal for walks, games and picnics.

Beyond the house there are many activities and events on hand. Llangollen itself holds the well-known International Eisteddfodd every August. It also has a food and drink festival in October. Visit the aqueduct, its gardening show, ride on the steam railway and visit Dinas Bran Castle.

Within the area you'll find golf courses, the Bangor on Dee race course, and a variety of outdoor pursuits (climbing walls, canoeing, paintballing, archery, fishing, gorge walking …). For evenings out there are wine bars, and a Michelin-starred Country House restaurant, Tyddyn Llann, one of the finest restaurants in Wales.

The historic town of Chester (with its famous racecourse), Shrewsbury, Wrexham and the fabulous mountain scenery and walks of Snowdonia are all an easy drive away.
