Tythe House

Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 16 (+ additional B&B accommodation)

Property description

The Tythe House is a small, elegant Cotswold manor house, built in the Queen Anne William and Mary style circa 1700. It has been the home of the Benton Family for over two generations, and has recently been lovingly and superbly restored by the current owners, Julian and Bernadette.

Situated in 200 acres of Cotswold farmland, the house is approached up a mature, tree-lined driveway. It's a fine example of classical Georgian symmetrical design, delightful in its practical simplicity, with a homely arrangement of rooms. These include three elegant reception rooms, a contemporary kitchen and eight individually-designed en-suite bedrooms. With log fires, oak floors, antique furniture and high-end bathrooms, and an Orangery suitable for functions, The Tythe House welcomes families but has very much been designed with adult relaxation in mind.

Location

Within walking distance of the market town of Tetbury. Here you will find a variety of individually-owned shops, from Prince Charles' Highgrove Shop selling produce from his estate to interesting antique stores, brocantes and chic boutiques.

Tetbury is ideally situated for exploring Cirencester, Bath, Bristol and the rest of the Cotswolds.

Airport: Bristol (approx. 35 miles)

Station: Kemble (approx. 7 miles; direct service to London Paddington)

Driving: B4014 Malmesbury to Tetbury Road. Exit junction 17, M4.

Helicopters welcome to land, subject to prior permission.

Accommodation

The three ground floor reception rooms are the Drawing Room, the Dining Room and the TV room. All three have original Cotswold stone fireplaces with working fires, beautiful soft furnishings and large windows giving an abundance of natural light. Complete with original shutters and window seats overlooking the gardens, they are perfect for lazy afternoons reading, chatting, listening to music or simply enjoying the views.

For moments of culinary inspiration, there's a truly 21st century kitchen! It is a spacious, sociable room with a four-oven electric Aga, pale blue painted units, a wine cooler, two sub-zero fridges, a TV, a dishwasher and more. At its heart is a granite work island, beautiful but functional, like the room. The dining room seats 20 in comfort, and is decorated with large paintings, modern fabrics in gold and red and statement wall lights.

The Orangery is included in the hire price if you are occupying all eight bedrooms; otherwise it is available as a function space at additional cost. This is an idyllic space with a glass roof, underfloor heating below its travertine stone floor, a large TV and a ceiling-mounted projector screen. French doors lead from here into the garden.

The eight double bedrooms are arranged over the first and second floors. They all have oak floors, beautiful fabrics, reclaimed fireplaces and impressive, gleaming bathrooms with either baths or power showers. The master room, for example, is decorated in pale greens. It has a Provencal-style distressed French bed, a dressing table and chair and a nursing chair. Its bathroom has a modern roll top bath, a wall-inset TV, chrome fittings, white shutters and a window seat.

A further four bedrooms are situated in the eaves. These rooms are similarly light and white, the exposed roof beams adding to their character.

Area

Tetbury came to life with the growth of the Cotswold Wool Trade, and celebrates over 1300 years of recorded history. It's a thriving town with a wealth of architectural heritage, including its iconic Market House.

Wherever you are, you'll see the skyline dominated by the magnificent spire of the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. With one of the tallest spires in the UK, this Georgian Gothic masterpiece - together with Tetbury’s many other listed buildings - make the town a designated outstanding conservation area.

Tetbury is well known for its wonderful antique shops and small specialist shops. There are also plenty of tea rooms, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The main market takes place under The Market House every Wednesday and Saturday selling, amongst other things, local crafts, food produce, jewellery and plants.

The Cotswolds are liberally sprinkled with pretty, historic villages, such as Bibury and Painswick, all easily accessible from the house. The ancient Roman town of Cirencester is 20 minutes away, the spa town of Bath 40 minutes. You're also close to Beaufort Polo grounds and Badminton.

There are various golf courses, and gorgeous cycling and walking routes which will keep active guests happy. More relaxing options include a stroll around Westonbirt Arboretum or a visit to the local health spa.
