Property description
This superb property is a traditional Laurageaise farmhouse in the style of a luxury country villa. It stands in beautiful landscaped gardens with 100-year old trees, surrounded by fields, and enjoys wonderful views.
The origins of the property date back to 1843 and it was renovated to an extremely high standard in the late ‘90s with luxurious fittings, stylish bathrooms, cheerfully painted walls and gas central heating. The house is spacious, very well equipped and beautifully furnished with top quality beds.
La Guiraude can be divided into “wings” (Main Wing and East Wing), one with four ensuite bedrooms, and the other with five bedrooms also en-suite. Each wing has its own lounge, dining room and kitchen, ideal if more than one family are sharing.
Constructed of white stone and brick under a tile roof, with many original decorative ironwork features, the house is warm in winter and remains beautifully cool during the hot summer months.
Location
The house enjoys privacy, being the only property at the end of a rural road, set on a hillside next to a wooded area. The small but lively town of Villefranche de Lauragais is a few kilometres away.
Accommodation
Residence La Guiraude sleeps up to 20 people in nine bedrooms.
The Main Wing (five en-suite bedrooms, sleeps 10) has an attractive front entrance, which leads into a generous reception hall, with a cloakroom/WC and a sitting area with access to the terrace. There is a large, very relaxing but uncluttered lounge with an original stone fireplace, and comfy leather sofas and chairs. A wooden staircase leads from here to a mezzanine library/reading area and a small, quiet room, with exposed beams and a wooden floor. All five bedrooms in the Main Wing are either double or twin rooms.
The East Wing has four en-suite bedrooms (sleeps 8 to 10). One is a double, one a twin, one has a large superking bed and one is a large, lofted family room with two Velux windows, two single beds and a double bed. This wing has a separate reception/entrance hall, a dining room seating 8-10, a kitchen, a lounge and a sun lounge leading to a large, sunny terrace area.
A full house party can come together in the main dining room for group meals. It has a large table seating 12 (other tables can be added to accommodate the whole party if necessary) and French windows lead to a large terrace with quality tables and chairs for the whole group.
Facilities
The Main Wing has a magnificent semi-professional kitchen, equipped to the highest standard, including a double gas hob and electric ovens, a separate electric hob, a microwave, two dishwashers and a large, American-style fridge. A laundry room next door has a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a leisure room with exercise equipment table tennis and table football. The East Wing also has a big, fully equipped kitchen and a laundry room with washing machine and dryer.
This is a lovely house for families and has everything children could need, including a cot, a high chair and a stair gate. Both living rooms have TVs with DVDs as well as CD players. There’s a swing set in the gardens.
The gardens are landscaped with trees, flowers, shrubs, paths, lighting and many stone benches where guests can sit in the shade or simply gaze at the views across the valley. Here you’ll find a lovely large heated swimming pool (12.5m x 6.5m) entirely enclosed by trees. It has a useful, Italian style pool house with a changing room and shower room, and there are plenty of sun loungers, chairs, tables and parasols for a large group of friends or family. Elsewhere in the gardens there’s a shallow pond with an Italian fountain feature and an arbour with a seating area, ideal for relaxing with a book and a drink.
High quality pillows, duvets, bed linen, towels, pool towels, bathrobes for adults, welcome toiletries on arrival, cleaning/housekeeping and pool services are all included in the rental price.
Free wi-fi and a computer are available.
A chef can be arranged for either a full catering service or individual meals, barbecues or gourmet dinners.
Area
This is one of the most interesting regions France has to offer. The immediate area around Residence La Guiraude is predominantly rural and full of sunflower fields in the heat of the summer. Not far away, the land turns to vineyards as far as the eye can see, producing such wines as Malapere Minervois and Corbieres.
The nearest shops are at Villefranche de Lauragais, a traditional French town with all amenities, many boulangeries, a weekly market and a good supermarket. The whole area has a rich history dating back to the Cathars.
Guests looking for activities will find lakes with water sports facilities close by, and the Canal du Midi lined with tall plane trees offering walks, boat trips and cycle excursions. There are horse riding and cycle hire available nearby.
The historic cities of Toulouse and Carcassonne are within half an hour’s drive. There are further castles, cathedrals and medieval market towns such as Revel and Mirepoix to explore, too, as well as various forests, gorges and caves. The towering, snow-covered peaks of the Pyrenees lie just over an hour to the south, and the beaches of the Languedoc coast little more than an hour to the east.
