Set in acres of beautiful English countryside and built on the foundations of a medieval village, Sheldon Manor, Wiltshire’s oldest inhabited Manor House; with its beautiful traditional roses, manicured lawns and specimen trees; is a wonderful escape from real life. Whether you are passionate about gardens and English heritage or just fancy a bit of “R&R” Sheldon Manor is the perfect place.

The estate, up a long tree lined drive way, comprises of the Manor House (available by separate negotiation for events). The Wing of the Manor and the four cottages (three interconnecting) are available to hire as a whole for large groups or individually.

Sheldon Manor is also licensed to host civil wedding ceremonies in many designated areas throughout the estate, including the 13th Century Porch (reputably the oldest in Britain) and the 15th Century Chapel is available for blessings and the exchange of rings. The use of a beautiful handcrafted wedding pavilion with Elizabethan rose motif on the lining seats from 60-90 for a wedding breakfast or special event and is included in the venue fee (tariff on application).

Christenings and naming ceremonies can be performed in the Chapel or in designated areas throughout the estate.

Sheldon Manor is ideal for parties, re-unions, special birthdays and anniversary events. Make your stay extra special by arranging catering and activities prior to your arrival - from one pot suppers and BBQs, to something a little more special; ritz style afternoon tea and croquet on the lawn, pool – side cocktails and canapés, or decadent three course affairs. How about a vintage coach ride to the ancient nearby villages of Lacock and Castle Combe and relaxing afternoons being pampered by local beauticians who can come to the Manor. Clay pigeon shooting and murder mystery evenings; here are just a few of the activities that can be arranged for your stay.

Come and join us for Christmas Enjoy complimentary festive goodies laid out in the cottages on arrival, a hamper full of home – made mince pies and mulled wine to get you into the Christmas spirit. On Christmas Eve, all on-site guests are invited to an evening of hot toddies and carols sung by choristers hosted in the great hall of the Manor House and the 15th century chapel – a wonderful start to Christmas.

Accommodation

The cottages are newly refurbished in country house chic style, with open fires and wood burning stoves. These properties are unlike most other cottages with their large rooms and high ceilings. They are furnished throughout with antiques and old oriental rugs. The kitchens are fitted out in traditional country style with butler sinks, solid wood work tops and only the essential ‘mod cons’. All properties are centrally heated.

Attached to the Manor House, the Wing has a large entertaining space for all the onsite guests and a wonderfully cosy ancient palour with an enormous ingle – nook fireplace ideal for nightcaps (Sleeps 6)

Walk through the Sunken Garden to The Bothy – 2 Doubles (one four poster), sitting room with open fire place, kitchen, bathroom, courtyard (Sleeps 4)

Barton Place is a charming, high ceilinged property with two beds plus an eaves room off the beamed bedroom (ideal room for children). Bathroom with a roll top bath, Kitchen, cloakroom, entrance hall and a sitting/dining room with a wood burning stove (interconnecting with The Bothy if required)(Sleeps 4 + 2 Children)

Cockloft has a rustic farmhouse kitchen and sitting room with a wood burner. Extra large bedroom with a high vaulted ceiling, open fireplace and ensuite bathroom/ dressing room. (Interconnecting with Barton Place if required)(Sleeps 2)

Howards End is a delightful 3 bedroom detached cottage with its own private garden. 3 doubles (2 which can convert to twin bedded rooms, 1 bedroom downstairs next to the bathroom.) A large eat – in kitchen and sitting room with an open fire place (Sleeps 6) There are twelve rooms (one of which is a four poster, one twin bedded and one a child eves room and nine doubles (two can be converted into twin rooms)

The Roman-Bath style open air swimming pool is not heated, but wonderful on hot summer days, being very long, turquoise and surrounded by lawn and ancient statuary.

Location

A completely rural location, surrounded by working farms, between three of the most beautiful villages in England – Biddestone, Castle Combe and Lacock. 1.5 miles west of Chippenham off the A420 and 4 miles from the M4. Close to Bath (10 miles) and the Cotswolds.

The nearest shop is the award-winning Allington Farm Shop (www.allingtonfarmshop.co.uk0, just a short walk, drive or cycle ride away. The shop provides all groceries and will also supply hampers or freezer food if required.

It is less than two hours drive from London to Sheldon Manor – or one hour and fifteen minutes from London Paddington. Nearest station: Chippenham (3 miles) Nearest Airport: Bristol (1 hour)

The gardens at Sheldon are old and romantic, with many trees and plants of interest to keen gardeners. There are numerous old roses blooming in great profusion from late May through June and July.

Local must-sees include the Cotswolds (Malmesbury and Tetbury are very close), the city of Bath for the Roman Baths, Pumps Rooms, Thermaspa, theatre and shopping; the National Trust village of Lacock, Castle Combe, Bowood House and adventure playground, Great Chalfield Manor (NT), Lacock Abbey (NT), Corsham Court. Lucknam Park – for riding, health and beauty facilities and dining out- to name just a few.

Westonbirt arboretum and the Beaufort Polo Club (matches most weekends during the summer months) offer wonderful afternoon entertainment and Sheldon is perfectly located for Badminton Weekend and Cheltenham Races.
