Northfields House is an exceptionally fine country house, set in just over five acres of grounds. There are few houses which provide such spacious accommodation with large rooms, splendid stone fireplaces, oak floors and other period features whilst at the same time retaining the warm, cosy atmosphere of a family home.
The house is available for self-catering although, if required, the owners can offer a fully catered service with an excellent chef and friendly staff. They also specialise in helping to organise corporate events, combining full professionalism with relaxed informality.
The grounds consist of well-tended lawns (ideal for croquet), mown paths through the natural wooded area and some magnificent mature trees. There are two grass tennis courts, two BBQ/terrace areas, an outdoor heated pool, table tennis and a squash court attached to the house with a viewing gallery from the upstairs landing.
Northfields has been in the same family for nearly half a century and the house and gardens are a reflection of the family’s sympathetic conservation of an original Edwardian country house.
There are 14 bedrooms, which sleep up to 28 people. All the principal rooms face south and overlook a garden which has been extensively landscaped. The house is extremely well kitted out in every respect down to the smallest detail. You will immediately feel at home upon arrival.
The two kitchens cater beautifully for large groups and are delightful rooms in which to prepare meals. Between them they have a four-doored Aga, electric oven and gas hob, two microwaves, two dishwashers, two washing machines, a tumble dryer, a large fridge freezer and a second fridge.
There are 14 bedrooms in all – five doubles (two of which are ensuite), six twins, two singles and one quadruple room in the attic. The whole property therefore sleeps 28.
Conference groups can comfortably use the antique dining room table for meetings, which seats 15, or the hall dining table which seats 30 comfortably. As far as wedding groups are concerned, everything can be arranged, whether flowers, catering, wine, transport, accommodation, marquee, music, PA system etc.
These include two TVs with DVD players and a CD player. The house has four beautiful grand pianos for your use with prior permission. The owner, Alasdair, who lives on site, is a gifted pianist and is happy to play for guests.
Two cots and a high chair are provided.
Within the grounds you’ll find two croquet lawns with equipment provided, and two very well-maintained grass tennis courts. The pool is heated and has a child-proof electric cover.
There are wonderful walks through the natural wooded area, a walled garden with herbaceous borders and wisteria clad walls as well as beautiful yew hedges and shrubberies, which help to create an ambience of peace and relaxation.
Pets are allowed by prior arrangement with the owner, together with a £100 damage deposit. Unfortunately, stag parties are not allowed, but sedate hen parties are welcome.
The rental price includes bed linen, towels, central heating and an initial supply of logs.
Between Chichester, Bognor and Arundel (five miles to each). All major supermarkets are within five miles and can deliver to the house. There’s a very good local shop/post office (open from 7am-7pm) in the village, and a couple of good local pubs, all within walking distance, and plenty of other restaurants in nearby towns. It is a 10-15 minute drive to the beach.
Airport: Gatwick (1hr by car or train); Southampton (1hr by car, 40 mins by train); Heathrow (approx. 1.5 hrs’ drive)
Station: Barnham (5 mins’ drive. Direct trains to London Victoria, 1.5 hrs)
Local attractions include Goodwood racecourse, Goodwood airfield, Goodwood health spa, Goodwood House (Goodwood Revival and Festival of Speed). You can easily visit Chichester Festival Theatre, Arundel Castle, Fontwell Racecourse, West Dean College. Horse riding is available at stables next door.
Watersports and nearby beaches provide opportunities for windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, waterskiing, surfing and fishing.
