Great Tangley Manor

Nr Guildford, Surrey, England

History-lovers, take note - the first mention of Great Tangley Manor was in the Doomsday Book in 1086, where it was described as a royal hunting lodge, reputedly later King John’s. Today it is, without doubt, the oldest Big Domain, a magnificent Grade 1 listed, 11th century moated manor house, with a completely self-contained wing, which sleeps 12 adults.

The house is beautifully rural and secluded, surrounded by fabulous wooded countryside, yet it is only 35 minutes by train from London’s Waterloo, and has all the amenities of Guildford close by.

The current owners bought the house in 2005, and have completely refurbished it. The kitchen is a joy to cook in and has an adjoining breakfast area in an architect-designed glass conservatory overlooking a private courtyard. A 40ft heated indoor pool and tennis court can be made available. Although you hire the house on a self-catering basis, caterers are available locally if required.

Children are most welcome, but please be aware that they must be supervised at all times, as the lake, pond and moat are unfenced.

As the pictures tell, this house is superbly decorated. Leaded windows, chandeliers and huge church candles sit comfortably alongside Conran-esque armchairs and lighting, with wooden blinds and flooring where appropriate. The reception rooms are big, relaxing and warm, and include a large drawing room, a quiet study, an oak-panelled library and a very smart, red-carpeted and antique-furnished dining room. The sheer age of the house does not allow real fires although there are fireplaces in each of the reception rooms.

16 adults can eat comfortably together in the dining room, and there’s room for a further 10 in the conservatory.

There is sleeping room for 12, spread over two twin/double, one twin (which share two bathrooms), a double also with a shared bathroom, and a master bedroom which has its own ensuite bathroom and separate dressing room. The double rooms have 6’ super king size beds and all the rooms invite blissful sleep. Two additional single folding beds can be put in various bedrooms, and a travel cot is available upon request.

William Morris, one of many notable guests at the manor over the centuries, is thought to have had some input on the design of the library and the garden, a beautiful lawned affair with mature shrubs leading down to the water.

Your every need is catered for, whether enjoying a weekend break with friends or staying as part of a business conference.

Price includes linen and towels and utilities. The house has interior mood lighting, Sky + HD Satellite (all packages available), Terrestrial TV, DAB and FM distribution with Sky remote distributed to the kitchen and library.

Tucked away at the end of a shared lane on Wonersh Common, set well back from traffic and neighbouring properties. The house is very accessible by road, rail or air, making it an ideal venue in the south for gatherings of friends, family or work colleagues. Guildford is three miles away, and the A3 four miles (providing easy access to the M25).
