Grace View

Saltash, Plymouth, Cornwall, England

When the owners of Grace View designed and built the house ten year ago, they incorporated the theories of Feng Shui, right down to the foundations. You may get a sense of this as you walk through the door, as the house is light, airy and calm, decorated in sunny colours with oriental touches.

The house stands in the quaint village of St Dominick, which has a popular local pub (the 16thC Who'd Have Thought It inn) and a shop. The world-famous St Mellion golf complex is a couple of miles away, which offers not only outstanding golf facilities, but also a gym and swimming pool. The owners of Grace View can arrange use of these. They can also arrange for a professional Oriental cookery demonstration at the house for your group.

The South Cornish coast is just a short drive away, where you can potter around fishing villages and pretty harbours such as Looe and Fowey. Central Plymouth is 13 miles away, the place for good shopping as well as the Theatre Royal, cinemas and a National Marine Aquarium.

The large kitchen is quite striking – well-proportioned with a big central island, halogen lighting, integrated oven and hobs and a wall-mounted TV. It has been very carefully thought out in terms of making life easy for cooks, and has all the usual gadgets. The utility room has full laundry facilities. The dining room is similarly minimalist and well-lit; sliding doors open onto a deck with a trestle table (beyond which is a grassy area).

The living room, a cheerful bright blue, is an easy chilling-out space, with leather sofas, a wood-effect burner, TV and DVD player.

There are six bedrooms spread over two floors – three doubles, and three twins – all light and painted in tranquil colours. Several have ensuite facilities. The master double has a TV, Freeview and great views down the Tamar estuary. Any children in the party may well gravitate towards the second floor a lot of the time, where there's a large games room with table tennis, table football, TV, DVD player, even a separate shower room.

St. Mawes, a charming waterside village, is a popular sailing centre on the Roseland. With its Tudor castle and holy well, it's steeped in history.

Famed for its colourful history of boatbuilding, fishing and smuggling, the appeal of Mevagissey is apparent. Cob cottages spill down the steep valley to the harbour walls where fishermen repair their nets on the quayside using ancient skills.

St. Austell is a bustling market town, surrounded by dramatic "Cornish Alps" of the Cornish china clay industry. The great sweep of St. Austell Bay offers outstanding cliff and coastal walks with superb beaches; or explore The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Since the middle ages, smuggling, pilchard fishing, piracy and shipwrecks all form an important part of the rich heritage of the picturesque town of Fowey. Associated with Daphne Du Maurier, Fowey hosts an annual festival celebrating her literary work.

Nestling in the river valley, Lostwithiel is Cornwall's hidden treasure. Overlooked by the 12th Century Restormel Castle it has become the antiques centre of the county, with many antique shops, fairs and markets.

The coastal resort and picturesque fishing village of Looe, with its sandy beaches and rock pools is great for families. Visit Looe Island, a natural sanctuary for sea and woodland birds and one time haunt of smugglers
