A very popular activity to enjoy during a group holiday is golf. Here at The Big Domain we’ve come up with some of our recommendations for the best courses around. While this in no way should be treated as a definitive list, hopefully our ideas should give you some inspiration for where you can enjoy the wonderful game.
We’ve put together a list of some of the finest courses across the UK and a sprinkling of courses from near our properties in other corners of the globe meaning you have plenty of options for where you enjoy your golf.
• Berkshire Golf Club
Home to two stunning courses, Berkshire Golf Club welcomes visitors all year round and proves a wonderfully entertaining challenge for all who grace its fairways. Enjoy your walk between the pines and take in 2 courses that are both listed in Golf Monthly’s top 100.
Although a little further afield, why not consider staying at Great Tangley Manor near Guildford?
• Royal Birkdale
Rated by many as the best course that England has to offer, Royal Birkdale is a delightful and challenging course that will be a great test for even the most confident of golfers. Situated near the Irish Sea, this course can be a tough test during bad weather, however, it is an enjoyable experience for most of the year.
For a property in Lancashire not too far from Royal Birkdale – consider Wolfen Mill.
• Turnberry
Another of the Open Championship venues on our list, Turnberry is one of Scotland’s highest rated golf courses and a brilliant place to spend an afternoon on the tees. With stunning coastal views and some challenging holes for even the finest of golfers, if you can get in, Turnberry is one not to be missed.
For a property that fits this stunning golf club – consider staying at Kinnettles Castle.
• Saunton
With two 18 hole courses, some people have described Saunton as the best club not to have hosted the Open. Stunning scenery and a splendid variety of holes make this one of our favourite courses in the South West and indeed England as a whole.
For those looking to play golf at Saunton – why not check out Ash Barton Manor House or Rhu House.
• Royal Porthcawl
One of the best courses in Wales and the UK, Royal Porthcawl is situated in the south of the country and while it is one of the best, it is a relatively unknown spot. With Cardiff and Swansea based in easy travelling distance, this makes a perfect venue for people staying in this part of Wales
Looking to play a round at Royal Porthcawl? Why not consider staying at Plas Cilybebyll.
• Royal North Devon Golf Club
Situated on the stunning North Devon coastline at Westward Ho! Royal North Devon is given credit for being the oldest links course in the country. A real ‘must play’ course that is worth it for the history and memories around the course alone, this challenging course is a good place to learn your trade as a golfer whilst also being a perfect spot to challenge the seasoned pro.
Anyone considering a trip to Royal North Devon may want to consider staying at Redland House or Hollands.
• Aberdovey Golf Club
Situated right in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, this North Wales golf course is one of the most stunningly beautiful options for anyone planning a trip into Wales.
Need a property close to Aberdovey Golf Club – consider Powys Country House or Llys Tanwg.
• Silloth on Solway
This somewhat hard to reach location in Cumbria is one of the finest golf courses available in the north of the country. If you make the effort to get to the club then you’re sure to enjoy one of the finest locations to enjoy golf throughout the UK whilst on a group holiday.

• Château des Vigiers
One of favourite courses across the whole of France, this stunning golf setting has its own vineyard and several different course options to play. Situated in Dordogne, it’s close to several of our properties so makes a brilliant stop off on your group holiday in France.
In Dordogne we have plenty of properties to choose from, but why not consider Chateau de la Couronne or Castel Merle?
• Florence Golf Club Ugolino
Rated as one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world, this wonderful location in the heart of Tuscany is a great place to enjoy a game. If you enjoy golf and you’re spending time in this part of the world then be sure to take a visit to one of our favourite courses around.
Check out Villa di Ulignano or Casale de'Pasquinelli for properties close to this wonderful course.
Before planning a trip to any of these golfing venues it’s a good idea to check the availability of tee times to ensure you’re not left disappointed upon arrival. While we haven’t been able to list all of our favourite courses, what we have been able to give you should give you an idea of some of the best places to play near our range of large group properties.
