A beautiful county of contrasts, Wiltshire is situated in the South West of England and one of the most popular holiday destinations in the UK. Most famed for Stonehenge and Avebury, this charming county witnesses thousands flock to its historical sites each year.
Stonehenge is one of the most famous places in the world and sits just north of Salisbury. Dating back to Neolithic and the Bronze Age era, it’s a set of standing stones which lie at the centre of some several hundred burial mounds. Nearby Avery Henge is of significant importance to contemporary pagans; a huge monument comprising of three stone circles, it’s one of the most prehistoric sites in Britain. Both sites have been added to the UNESCO’S World Heritage Sites and our very well preserved.
One of the prettiest cities in the country, Salisbury is a wonderful place to visit. The medieval Salisbury Cathedral was built in 1220 and contains the oldest working clock in the world; also housing the four best surviving copies of the Magna Carta, it’s a fascinating place to visit.
Much of the county is designated as ‘Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ including the vast expanse of land also known as Salisbury Plain. A wild landscape offering magnificent skies and broad horizons, there’s plenty of awesome beauty to witness; an area that looks almost untamed, enjoy exploring its habitat and the array of endangered species that have made this unique place their home.
To the north and west of Wiltshire lies the Cotswolds, and areas also known as the ‘heart of England’ which extends into this beautiful country. The Cotswolds are where picturesque towns and villages are characterised by light stone walls, thatched roofs and rolling hillsides.
