Swathed in history, Essex is a historic area located in the east of England and offers a diverse range of places to enjoy a break. Neighbouring London it’s also known as one of the ‘Home Counties’ and is a popular place for commuters, due to its fantastic transport links.
There are a number of historic places of interest within this attractive county, most notably the market town of Colchester, which is the oldest recorded town in the country. Once the capital of Roman Britain it still retains some of its ancient buildings, including the Roman temple of Claudius, on which the Norman build Colchester Castle has since been erected.
Essex also enjoys a rich maritime history with Maldon and Mersea Island being described by some as ‘little Brittany’. Both are places where you can sample a real flavour of the English coast, by tasting the local delicacies of fresh fish and Colchester Oysters, or perhaps take in the sights of the pretty sail boats as you meander along the quaint quaysides.
Rural Essex is an inspiring place to spend time in; also known as “Constable Country” it is characterised by the vast expanses of open countryside so beautifully depicted in his paintings. The local landscape is littered with pretty villages featuring ‘chocolate box’ thatched cottages and traditional wooden barns. The Dedham Vale and Stour Valley are two such places, where you can also enjoy guided tours of the area.
