Located in the north east of England, Durham is an ancient city, so swathed in history that in 1986 the site of the castle and cathedral was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Durham Cathedral which dates back to medieval times is the Shrine to St Cuthbert, the ‘wonder-worker of England’ and the 900 year old castle now houses Durham University, is also affectionately known as ‘Castle’.
A vibrant city of contrasts, old world charm meets modern amenities as you meander through Durham’s cobbled streets to duck in and out of designer boutiques and popular restaurants, whilst artisan shops and galleries add a quirky edge to its pretty city centre.
The countryside beyond is rich in agricultural land and home to many bustling towns and villages, as well as Sedgefield Racecourse. Travel a little further from the city centre and the area known as The Durham Dales offers a diverse landscape that’s both rugged and beautiful.
One of the areas greatest pulls of the North East is the dramatic Durham coastline; a heritage coast of geological and historical interest, it features imposing headlines and craggy cliffs that offer breath-taking views across the North Sea. Take a walk through the national nature reserve, Castle Eden Deane and enjoy the ancient medieval woodland.
