Holidays in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a culturally rich and diverse island off the southern tip of India surrounded by the indigo waters of the Indian Ocean, the Palk Straight and the Gulf of Mannar.

It is not difficult to see why Sri Lanka is such a popular destination for groups seeking a refreshing mixture of sun, sea and culture. The island set like a jewel in the Indian Ocean is resplendent as it boasts lush verdant virgin rainforests, ancient cities and miles upon miles of open coastline. The island is full of exotic flowers, wildlife and sightings of leopards and elephants in the virgin rainforests and even the blue whale in the surrounding waters are common.

Swimming in these warm waters and sinking your feet into the ripples of soft sand is a perfect way to spend a leisurely day taking in the sun. For a day of exploration it is possible to visit any one of the eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as the Sinharaja Reserve, the Sacred City of Anuradhapura and the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa. Other places of interest are The Golden Temple of Dambulla, a hot spot for pilgrimage for Buddhists throughout the ages, Sigiriya, or Lion Rock a 200 meter high ancient ruined city set in the heart of Sri Lanka and the Sacred Temple of the Tooth a royal palace.

The island is full of unique sights complete with ancient walled cities, fallen temples, royal palaces and many different religious and royal monuments. Sri Lanka has a magnificent array of gems in its soils as forty out of the eighty five varieties of gemstones are found here including the finest blue sapphires in the world.
