History and myths of Crete
Crete was at the heart of the Minoan civilization from 2600 – 1150 BC, a sophisticated society with their own Navy. The Minoan society started to decline after Santorini's volcano erupted and they were later superseded by the Mycenaean's from the mainland. You can see ancient sites around the island from this time period in forms of palace ruins, sacred sites and tombs. Crete was invaded by the Romans from 69 – 330 AC which, along with the Byzantine era, brought wealth to the island which can still be seen through the many monuments and mosaics still around today. Fast forward to 1941 and Crete was victim to an airborne attack by Germany, parts of the island were so heavily bombed you can still see the damage to some of the towns and buildings.
From the Minoans to the Romans, Crete is synonymous with mythical legends and powerful Gods. The birth place of Zeus, Minos and where the Minotaur is said to have been defeated by Athenian prince Theseus, there is plenty to set your imagination on fire.
